As simply put as possible:
We can run 40 head on our farm. For reasons I wont bore you with we will only have 20 head this year. Question is, can we get by with fertilizer at half our normal rate? Trying to control costs in this off year.

Thanks for all opinions!

We have never rotated pastures, but will be doing that to do that to some degree this year.

Depending on a soil test you might get by with none.
Or you might fence part of it off and fertilize just what your going to hay. Get your soil tested and then decide.

kansasbeef,

i'm with dj. but also what is your "normal" rate? just grazing you should beable to do pretty good with just 40-60 lbs an acre of nitrate. then if you have been keeping it up all these years with tight manging and kept the soil tested and did the recommended, and these is a off season sure you should beable to do nothing at all and do very well and not have much problems next year. asuming you are grazing. if you are cutting hay you might get away this year but it could be costly next year.
