Fertilizer with Grazon next

Help Support CattleToday:

2,4d works fairly well on wild mustard here locally if you hit it in Feb or early March, before it bolts. Once it bolts, it's pretty tough. Spreading fertilize coated with Grazon in late March to April with hopes of controlling mustard in our locality is a fairytale.
True enough…I hit mine in March but some that was sprayed over the last week is also responding…feels too early to me but we did have a mild winter and an early spring. The bitter weeds starting coming up in force so I went ahead and broke out the Grazon this week before they take hold in a few spots…will probably have to do it again for the late bloomers.

Spray applications seem to work reasonably well on mustard after it has bolted, but I've yet to see anything close to a decent response from herbicide coated granular fertilizer at that point.

I was in the Beaumont area two weeks ago and it looked like late May here, wish I had more time to look around.

Ah...never used the coated granular fertilizer...it seems like it would be iffy...but then I don't know muck about it.

One of the experts around here (mostly for turf) has always had a mantra, "never use weed and feed". "You will not get the desired results from either one." "Kill the weeds first, than fertilize a couple weeks later.

On the question of clover and 2 4 D , here's a small pasture we sprayed with 24 D last year . May have to zoom in to see it .IMG_5910.jpegIMG_5911.jpeg

Different pasture that was bad weedy and was sprayed with Grazon next 2 years ago . Not as lush with clover but it's there . View attachment 43798View attachment 43799
I don't stress about spraying clover, it is an annual that specialises in producing a lot of seed with a lot of that being hard seed that will lie dormant for years until it is needed.

When you spray herbicide in water or liquid fertilizer, good coverage of the weed is important. There is a recommended range of gallons per acre of water and recommended pressure range on the nozzle for effective results. When herbicide is applied in granular fertilizer, the herbicide is mostly going on the soil. Moist soil or rain will move the herbicide into the ground where the roots can take up the herbicide. Seems to me that most of the results has to come from the residual chemical instead of the 2, 4-D. Unless the granular fertilizer is spread with a very heavy dew or in the rain. Think about spraying 2,4-D on the ground around a weed, will the 2,4-d kill the weed from the soil?

The herbicide manufacturer says that weed control is less compared to conventional application.
Our local chemical guy(not a corteva rep) that sells to both local fertilizer companies was talking the other day about grazon and duracor on dry fertilizer. He likes grazon better because the 2,4-D off gasses and does work on the leafs not just through to soil. Duracor doesn't do this as there is no 2,4-D. I don't know the science but I have seen weeds wilt the same day in dry conditions with a grazon application on dry fertilizer.
As far as the rates go. We've always heard 200/lbs per acre so there are enough pellets on the ground to get get coverage. I do know there are a few people that have only been applying 150/lbs for several years and seem to be happy with the results.
Just last week I ran a small patch with 150 lbs and one with 100 lbs. Both straight urea because it's less dense leading to more pellets on the ground. I used duracor because it's a lesser rate per acre and I wanted to avoid a soupy mess sense I was also running a nitrogen stabilizer. So far the weeds are beginning to wilt but we only had .2 of rain last week. Got nearly an inch last night so should have it in the ground better now. Time will tell if it's going to work season long.

I totally agree , I've seen dry weather wipe our stand out and the next spring I worried the cows might bloat from eating too much !

Whenever I spray 24D, you can see the leaves of the weeds starting to wilt in a few hours. I just don't see how coating fertilizer granules with it, can work.
I'm skeptical too Warren , but my fertilizer guy really talked it up . I bought the Grazon and it was no charge on his part to apply it to the fertilizer. The new fields we put it on have a lot of terraces and will be a trick to spray with our spray rig . I've wasted money on goofier stuff than this ! Next day I could see weeds already wilting 🥀.

By the way guy never called me back on the local milk cow so I finally got him to give me his #. Sounded foreign but not Hispanic? He had someone coming to look at her that day. In the meantime my bottle calf has quit the bottle. She is grazing, eating feed and getting a little milk from the twins momma . Worse part I just bought a new bag of milk replacer . 🤦🏻‍♂️

You still wanting one if I run up on one at a good price?

Maybe , you can holler at me . You still have my # ? I have a former student who has 3 on the bottle. If I don't he might ! 😁

We catching calves now to send to Arab for Tuesday. Got about 10-12 late fall , winter calves . Some really nice ones and a few sort of rough around the edges . Hope the buyers see their growth potential and not their rough coats .

Only sent 7 , one heifer , best one in the bunch , has an eye bothering her . Treated and put in weaning pasture . Had 3-4 that were a little lighter than I thought. We are really blessed with grass so we'll give them another 30-45 days .

I have read about and heard it really works on fertilizer. I saw on rfd the other night they were impregnating it in the field with a machine between the tender and spreader. I doubt it will ever happen in this area. Grazon and tobacco is a big no no. No one would want it in buggy or spreader trucks or mixers. Is there no concerns about it being in mixers or trucks then going to soybean fert? I know it isn't as sensitive as tobacco but do wonder.

@K C Farm , @coachg is up in NE Alabama, and I would not hesitate at all myself to get a couple of calves to raise from him. He has good Angus and Angus cross cattle, takes care of them well, and he'd be fair and honest with you.

My fertilizer guy has 2 mixers , one for the Grazon fertilizer and one for plain . He has 3 buggies marked only for Grazon and will not haul it in his tender trucks . I think he's careful not to contaminate fertilizer going to row crop farmers .
