Group sales

In my small county in Kentucky, the average beef herd size is probably around 15 head. Our Cattlemen's Association has tried in the past to get a group sale going, but it seems like people are just too independent. It always starts off well, and then interest fades and nobody wants to follow through. As one of our Cattlemen said, "Everybody thinks his calves are better than everybody else's."

We're once again at that planning phase. We have 7 producers who've said repeatedly they want to participate in a group sale. Now, it's a matter of choosing a vaccination program and trying to get as uniform a load as possible, plus trying to maintain interest and momentum.

Has anyone experienced this and managed to successfully come through all the fog of ego to put together such a sale? Any words of wisdom for us?

These type sales will be the only viable way for small breeders to get a leg up in the future. IMHO

Leadership, leadership, leadership.

Old habits die hard.

If you are close to central Ky try the bluegrass stockyard KPH sale, good price were you are paid for what you bring in.

It would be worth the drive in most cases.
