The other tread got me thinking .. What do you estimate your feed cost was this past year to raise a 600lb calf in your area . Just to feed the cow/calf

$18.45.

They get cubed once in a while to get them coming in to the pen. That's it.

Fertilizer cost for the pasture was just over $7500 But that's not what you asked.

About 350$ for the cow and 150$ in the calf after weaning and getting it sold at 650lbs. My cows made 1000$ a head after taking care of themselves this past year.

Hay, meds, and mineral on a cow for a year, probably would be scratching on $400
Weaned calf, might eat another roll of hay, and 1000 pounds of feed-----be around $150

Feeding the animals is cheap part though.

Seed - 1141.84
Fertilizer - 4522.00
Feed - 487.1
--------------------------
Total - $6150.94 / 43 Calves is $143.04 with an average weaning weight of 523.10 lbs ..... now throw in fuel, insurance, depreciation, truck (Schedule F)...... that comes to $645.62 per weaned calf.... but that's just last year for me.

Don't know how that stacks up against others, but I'm fine with it. Hope this year is as good.

If calculations are correct....186 days to get their.

Not bad at all, here at the right times last year 520lb steers were 3.00$ or better. So 645$ for some 1500 to 1600$ calves in 186 days ain't to bad.

About $500 in salt, $2000 in diesel, $300 in bale twine, $300 for tags/vaccines, and typically $500 in seed for $3600 total.. Last year my calf sales were $19000, so leaving $15,400 from 23 cows is $669. If you would count in the 8 calves I still have from last year for another $10,000 it would be $25,400, which works out to $1,104.

However, this is a grossly oversimplified equation, and doesn't include dozens of expenses.. insurances, machine depreciation, labor......
