The Girl Scouts of the United States of America filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America on Tuesday, after the Boy Scouts decided to drop "Boy" from its namesake program and start welcoming older girls.

The lawsuit in Manhattan federal court is an attempt by the Girl Scouts, founded in 1912, to avert an erosion of its brand and membership as the Boy Scouts, founded two years earlier, tries to reverse its own decades-long membership decline.

Six months ago the Boy Scouts, which accepts children 11 to 17 years old, said it would in February 2019 change its name to Scouts BSA and make girls eligible to earn its highest rank, Eagle Scout.

The organization also launched a "Scout Me In" campaign, which features boys and girls.

Neither the Boy Scouts nor its general counsel responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against trademark infringement.
The Boy Scouts, based in Irving, Texas, recently had about 2.28 million members, less than half its peak in the 1970s, while the Girl Scouts, based in Manhattan, said it has about 2 million.

In the complaint, the Girl Scouts said the Boy Scouts have no monopoly over such terms as "scouts" and "scouting" when it offers services to girls.
It said the name change threatens to "marginalize" Girl Scouts activities and has already sown confusion, with families, schools and communities nationwide being told the organization no longer exists, or merged with the Boy Scouts.
"Only GSUSA has the right to use the Girl Scouts and Scouts trademarks with leadership development services for girls," and the Boy Scouts infringements are "new and uniquely damaging to GSUSA," the complaint said.
"We did what any brand, company, corporation, or organization would do to protect its intellectual property, the value of its brand in the marketplace, and to defend its good name," the Girl Scouts said in a statement.
The Boy Scouts has said its rebranding was part of a single-name approach it adopted when it decided in October 2017 to let girls enroll in the Cub Scouts, for children 7 to 10 years old.
The case is Girl Scouts of the United States of America v Boy Scouts of America, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 18-10287.

As an Assistant Scoutmaster, I am not a fan of girls being in Boy Scouts. This will create more problems than they imagine. But the Girl Scouts should lose this case. They are just mad because they will lose membership.

Have you ever been to Camp Davy Crockett? My daughter does volunteer work there and GSon has been going there several summers.

Oh, it is over the name. I was worried it was part of the Me To movement. I know several former scouts who will go unnamed that could have been in trouble.

I have been to Camp Davy Crockett. In fact BSA bought the land from my great uncle years ago. I have not spent a ton of time there as our Troop elects to go to a camp in Virginia each year. There are still Meetings and OA that take place there. It is funny, but our District camp is in Rockwood, when we are only a few miles from Camp Davy Crockett. It is all in the boundary lines.

When Lady Baden-Powell started a sister organisation to the Boy Scouts founded by her husband, she called them "Girl Guides" and they have maintained their separate identity ever since, although we shared many facilities in the past such as Lord Baden-Powells' farm Gordon Park which was gifted to the scout organisation as a training and camping site. We used to have the annual jamboree there where part of the agenda was to speak to scouts all over the world on short wave radio.

Went to a church function last week where my MIL attends (Methodist). They had boy scouts cleaning tables etc. I don't think I ever seen such a large group of feminine, sissy looking guys in my life. Wimpy looking guys, pimples everywhere, one with the badge for his rank sewed on upside down...What has happened to the BSA?? I don't think there was a measurable level of testosterone in the entire group. The girls will definitely be "safe".
