A pocket knife is a great gift for a cowman. It's useful but also becomes personal. I have a bunch of them but the only two I use were gifts. I carry one most of the year and switch to the other during branding season and keep it sharp for cutting calves.

Quality leather work always makes a nice gift. The usin kind of course. His initials, or brand would make it personal.

I like this 3 7/8" one blade Lockback pocket knife for $62
white bone handle is classy for engraving name or initials, making it a personal keep safe gift
1 blade Lockbacks are easy to open and close, which becomes more important the older you get
3 7/8" closed makes it small enough to carry and big enough to be useful when opened

Large groove joint pliers. Everybody needs one.

Some tie down straps are nice too.

Just since we're talking about knives, There's a fellow not too far from you in Lytton BC who does phenomenal custom knives... Not cheap, but take a look at the knife gallery he has http://kniferepairs.ca/

I'd like to know how the 2401 or 2502 Bowie knife feels in my hand. I have plenty of shorter bladed Marbles knives but I like the look of those two. They'd have to feel right before I bought.

I had one small knife with a curved handle and blade, dont' know what it was called, but it felt SO nice in my hand.. excellent skinning knife

While things are nice, your time is the best thing that you can give someone. Some day, hopefully in the distant future, he will be all stoved up and not able to do what he used to do, or god forbid he ends up in a nursing home. Stopping in to visit him once a month, even for just an hour or two will make his week. A good friend of mine lost a mentor a week or two ago and he was pretty tore up and telling me about it, my comment to him was the best way to honor and remember a guy like that was to pay the kindness forward. I think the same could be said about your friend here.

Yes Feel is everything for me. I have some old Marbles Kraton handled knives that feel right and grip well when I am skinning hogs. Grease doesn't cause me to slip my grip or get sloppy. They are all I use on hogs and I really don't use them for anything else. Short thick blades. Same knife with another handle just doesn't feel the same.
