You stick a finger up their rear end and start counting. The young ones will kick you in less that 30 seconds anything over 5 will stand there for at least a minute before they turn around and stomp the crap out of you.
:nod: we've done it that way for years.
 
You can teach a horse to count so if you cross a cow and horse , if you ask the course how old it is, it will count off how old it is.
I do this all the time at the auction barn.
