If she is a true F1 Braford...1/2 Brahman, 1/2 Hereford...then her 60 chromosomes ( 30 pair) will be 30 Brahma and 30 Hereford. Her eggs then which only has one strand, 30 chromosomes, could either be Brahma or Hereford. This calf and the last one, got the Brahma genetics The next one or 2 or however many she has, may get the Hereford genetics, and be a bwf.

I've had baldy calves have all black babies before. Also had a composite baldy bull Angus x Hereford that would throw all black calves. Last year we had two cows throw unexpected baldies. One cow had a touch of white on her bag and another had a tad bit of white above her eye. Odd the way that stuff works

I admire you keeping cows that old. And they are great cows. I'm a big advocate for longevity because it means the cows have great structure and fertility or they wouldn't be retained. And replacing cows has a cost, whether it's with bought heifers or raised animals. In your case and I was looking to build a herd, I'd be interested in purchasing any of your heifers that look the part and you'd be willing to sell. I could learn from you.

I have had some make it up to fifteen but they became slow to breed back and the calves got smaller.

Brahman adds longevity along with management. It’s all about grass and genetics.
Good grass equals good teeth and longevity. Brahman cross just supercharge the longevity.
There is a reason over 40% of the US herd is Brahman influenced and they dominate world wide as 70% of cattle are raised in the subtropics .

I'm out of the business these days. I regret selling out every day and miss the life. But you've shown me some things I thought were possible when I was selling replacement heifers.
If I was younger I'd be interested in putting together a herd of heifers from cows over twenty and really get serious about increasing longevity. If I could find a way to put 500 together and close the herd it could be profitable in the long term as selling breeding stock.

The cow with the baldie calf is 1/2Hereford 1/4 Brahman and 1/4 Char.
She has thrown some pure white ones, looked registered Charlois.
She is out of one of my old neighbors cows and my bull back in the day.

I too keep older cows...
So far I have 2 calves this year born a week apart. One from 8yr old had a bull and one from a 14yr old a heifer...
I love how they are best buds... Nestling in the hay together.. Of course both mums are related to each other ...

This past year was the sad year of losing several geriatric moms... Have shipped about 20 over the last year that were in the 12-15 yr old bracket that just did not breed back... all had calves on their sides and decent calves. One that was due in Dec , had a calf that died, and we kept her on feed for about a month and she went with this last group of 8 opens... 6 had no teeth, one had been a hold back one other time and one was a younger cow that raised a mediocre calf and was open so went... it's been hard seeing some of the old faithfuls leave this year... but the prices that cull cows are bringing, we are NOT burying them for sentimental reasons...
I realize that we have to do percentages of opens compared to breds and this past year our percentages were not great...30%..... but when you factor in the age of all the opens and take that away, then our percentage of opens was not bad... Granted, that is not the "cold hard mathematical" way to do it... but it was understandable to have many more opens than "normal" with the old cows we were keeping and getting bred every year...
Got 5 more ... 3 are no teeth with little fall calves on them, couple are getting around slow... they are getting fed corn silage along with hay, doing an okay job, and this will be their last calf. They will go out to a pasture where there are no other cattle very close, no bulls, get the summer to eat grass and raise their calf... and then when the grass runs out, they will go . NOT going to foist them off on someone at a bred cow sale... so I guess that is our ethics kicking in.... and they deserve this last deal.
We do buy some of those geriatric cows with calves at sales... have done decent with them... right now not worth it to us...
