Dun, when I shut my main breaker off it prevents it from backfeeding the line. Mainly to protect anyone working on lines that are supposed to be dead

That's the way ours works to, most all the farms are set up that way. Theo nly thing we can;t run with it is the water heater, but everything else runs all at the same time just fine.

That is the way I have mine set up, but the downside of this is that your neutral is still connected to the utility power grid. If a hot and a neutral slaps together while they are working on the lines your generator gets fried. No danger to the linemen having it hooked up this way, just your generator. But you probably could replace a couple of generators for what a disconnect switch would cost you with instillation.
 
If you have remote read meters (the kind that can be read from the office) have some fun and switch meters with your neighbor while you have it out. Just make sure that they normally use less kwh than you do. If I understand correctly how these work, the meter is assigned an ip and mac adress that is linked to your address. Switch meters and you switch power bills, and you drive your neighbor nuts figuring out why their power bill went up.

That would be theft, fraud and downright dishonest
 
We are in an ice storm now. Been without power since about 6pm. I hope it doesn't last long, but we have done 11 days without. We hook the generator straight in to the main house panel. Turn the main breaker at the meter loop off, and the main breaker in the house box off. Hook the generator up to the house box thru another breaker. Turn off all the unnecessary breakers. We only fed the fridge, freezers, and a couple outlets for radio, TV/VCR, and a couple lights. We would turn the fridge and freezer off, and the hot water heater on before we wanted a shower. When the hot water heater thermostat kicked off, we turned off that breaker, then turned the well pump on and had a hot shower. Then turned them off, and the other stuff back on. Just have to manage it. We did this all with a 5750 watt/6500 surge generator.
Right now we are loving living on kerosene and propane lighting, and battery backup from one of those multi outlet battery backup/surge protectors that most people buy for computers. They work well even better than most smaller inverters. I can take this unit to the truck and charge its battery with a $30 inverter that plugs in to the cigarette lighter and run our computer and charge our cell phones for hours after it has been charged. Exciting times these are. Memories are being made as I type
 
I hate to be the bearer of bad news Ouchita, but from what I read today, there's another Arctic blast gonna hit right behind this one--It will be moving across North Texas DFW about Monday night or on Tuesday.

We are supposed to be 7 Monday night. Hasn't been that cold in prol more than 20 years.
My daughter is going to school in Fayetteville and its going to be -2 there. She's never been in that cold of cold before and she's not one bit happy. She'll be 20 in February.

I wish I could have had either of those temps during Muzzleloading season here.
 
From limited news sources, seems like a several county power outage. We are just enjoying wood heat, coffee, and listening to the "gun shots" every few seconds. Trees and limbs are snapping everywhere

over in RBBs part they still have to pipe in daylight

About the same here 68 degrees yesterday and right after midnight the temp dropped from the 40s to the 20s, intermittent mix of sleet and freezing rain. Friends of ours went to Brownsville tx to get away from the cold and they're whining about it only getting to 40 today

Sounds like another case of weather remorse! Have you ever noticed that a lot of people complain about the weather but none, nadda, zero of them ever do any thing about it, oops, forgot about the inventor of the internet. The only problem is the problem isn't global warming, it's global freezing and that is what the wife and I are doing now. I "forgot" to tell her that there is a generator out in the shop so I'll just have to let her keep on warming me up. :lol2:
