Mercy!!!

School is started. I've bought 8 or 9 T shirts for the granbabies. Then there is the T Shirts for football games. Then there are football pictures.

Boy Scouts are selling popcorn and atleast a dozen kids have hit me up.

Now work is having the United Way fund drive. I have given my "fair share" my entire professional career. But they are having raffles. Bake sales. Luncheons. My email runneth over for TV raffle. Gift Card raffle chances.

Some of us give all year long. If someone is in need, we jump in there. These people selling raffle tickets are convinced that this is a once a year thing. They have no clue as to what we have already given. I've personally already "donated" somewhere around $3,000 to needing people this year. Proud to help them. Its private. Personal. But I almost want to talk about it to the raffle ticket sellers.

unless its a really good friends kid or a relative I just say I've already donated to another cause. I typically only donate to FFA and the Shriners hospital. Set a standard and stick to it.

My two kids brought home order forms for some fundraiser at school. My wife and I gave each kid a check for $50 made out to the school and told them that we would not be begging to family and friends. I try and do the majority of my giving through my church to be honest. You are right, every where you turn around somebody is asking for something. Even if all of these somethings are great causes there is a limit.

I got 3 small kids. I don't let them do one for the school. I pay enough in taxes. We do the club/sports fundraisers. How else will they be successful if we don't?

I feel your pain - from both sides. I'm on the board of a non-profit and we have 4 fundraisers a year in addition to a "no-show" mailing and a handful of grants. The Director is the only one that gets a small salary, everyone else in the organization is volunteer and it's a much needed, worthwhile service for the community. Having said that, it's extremely hard to solicit funds, especially in a small community because the same businesses/people are targeted each time; going outside the box has yet to yield much profit. My husband & I are solicited on a regular basis and we're very generous but I've finally learned how to say "no" to some requests.

The only one's I say no to are the firefighters, and Red Cross. Otherwise the kids always get a few dollars. I use to hate going around begging for money as a kid. Just so we could play sports.

I feel your pain, being a business owner we get hit constantly for every type of fund raiser or charity event. We have finally budgeted for what we will give each year and once its gone we have to say no.

All that being said I received a phone call yesterday from the twins, who started pre-k this year. They are selling cookie dough. They were so excited to tell me all about it. I asked what kind of cookie dough they had, they said the kind you make cookies out of. I asked how much it cost and they said some money. They are great salespersons I am buying a boat load of cookie dough. They were so excited and cute I couldn't resist!

You've almost sold me on buying some.......almost.

I do the 4H/FFA fundraisers, VFW and the local Volunteer Fire Dept. Everything else is Church or 'maybe' UF.
Might buy GS cookies if I happen to be hungry at the time.

I'll have to admit I'm a sucker when it comes to the kids and will usually "donate" until it hurts. Don't have much sympathy for the professional fund raisers (Red Cross, Salvation Army, Police unions, etc.)

World's finest Chocolates were really good candy bars. They're not 50 cents anymore tho. You can't buy those in the store. I usually buy a few of them if someone is selling here at work. The other candy seems like a rip off. The selling organization doesn't get that much out of it. Popcorn seems about the same way. I am better off just making a straight donation and buying my own from the store (if I want it).

The car washes can be really good sometimes. It usually depends on who is doing the cleaning. I've also had a softball team clean the windows at the house. The kids feel like they earn it and that's a good thing.

I suppose its all timing at the moment. There's like 11 different United Way raffles going on. I am feeling inundated.

I never tell neighborhood children how I really feel. So they haven't a clue.

My kids brought home a paper selling about 2 years ago and I refuse to bother folks and beg so we bought a pile of crap so they could be number one in there class and get limo rides. That was the one and only time we participated. My workers bring that crap in I tell them take it right back out the office. I will give to like the st judes or mcdonalds house for kids stuff but girl scouts and boy scouts ... NOPE

With 5 kids in school/sports/band etc we have to deal w these fundraisers. Luckily I can bring a box of candy to work and sell out without having to ask. I will buy the other guys kids fundraisers when they bring em. I hate dealing w it though. On the rare occasion a kid shows up going door to door I will buy only because I admire the kids effort.

A few years ago a high school kid who lived across the street from us went around the neighborhood collecting for the "After Homecoming Party" although there was no such thing. He got about $85.00 dollars until he knocked on a teacher's door. The teacher immediately informed his mother and she made him return the money and apologize to each donor individually. Also grounded him for about 10,000 years.

My tithe comes first. I give to missions, Billy Graham, Samaritan's Purse, St. Jude, Shriners' Hospital, Cancer Fund, Heart Fund and some others. Not in any way am I trying to brag about what I give. God has blessed me and nothing makes me feel better than to give to others.

Ronald McDonald House is a great charity. We have personally been helped by them when our son was going thru health problems. Lots of companies help support them on the local level by donating food to the houses for families to eat.
