Fuel Sending Unit (JD 4020)

Hey all,

Recently picked up a new fuel sending unit for my 4020D from our local deere dealer. Removed the old, and installed the new. The previous gauge was stuck on E.

After installing the new sender. I turned the key on to find that the guage was now buried on F.

The tank is slightly under half per dowl stick. At first I assumed that I had put the sending unit in upside down. However, at slightly under half, I would be getting a reading of slightly over half.....if the unit was upside down. Anyone know....do these need to be calibrated somehow? Any ideas / insight ?

Sounds like a bargain to me. Going from E to F for the price of a sending unit.

First thing I'd check would be all the electrical connections. Dirty, loose, corroded. My only other advice would be to paint it blue. :P

If its pegged on F, the wire that goes to it must be grounded out. It might have a bare spot on it, touching a metal part of the tractor. Look for anyplace on the wire that might be grounded to the tractor frame, or engine.

Sounds to me like you have a bad ground to the sending unit. Try turning the switch on and then ground the sending unit good with a wire to the neg. post of the battery. At least it won't cost much to try it.

There should be a Faston (push on) terminal somewhere on the ring flange on the fuel tank where a ground wire is connected. I'll bet the wire is missing or dirty and not making connection.
