I was at an seed meeting the other night. They were promoting Brassica as a late summer forage. It suppose to keep growing until it gets down in the teens. Seeded with rye or oats it suppose to provide a high quality feed.

Anyone have any experience with this Forage. Thanks!!

I've always wanted to try some purple top turnips, but I only have a few acres. I know a guy down on the Snake River in southeastern WA that flew his seed on then harrowed it in. They ran steers on it all winter never did have to feed them. When they finally had the tops all eaten they used a tool bar and worked the turnips to the top and they ate them also. I don't recall what the daily gain was, but he said it was cheap for them.

A dairyman in our county has planted about 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. of purple top turnips per acre with his cereal rye- ryegrass mix to get early grazing. He told me he estimated about 4000 lbs. dry matter. He flash grazed to get them off so the rye/ryegrass could come on. It did allow him an extra 20 to 30 days grazing in the fall.
