Feed conversion?

Hello, I am pretty new at raising cattle after having sheep for wayyyyy too many years!!! :)

I was just curious as to what the average feed conversion is for a beef steer. Like how many pounds of feed should it take to put one pound on the steer? Just a ballpark figure is fine.

I have AngusX steers, and also some purebred holstein dairy steers. My feed mill man suggests like a 16-18% all-purpose feed. I really don't know much about feeding steers!

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Your Angus x steers will have better feed conversion than the holstiens. You'll probably look at 6 pounds of feed for the Angus and around 8 pounds for the holstiens. This includes all feed they eat, grain and roughage. Of course individual animals will vary, I have had some Angus bulls convert at about 4:1.
