Eye problem - pic

Took this picture of our girl this afternoon. We put Terramycin ointment in it. The eye is watering a lot but we had just put the ointment in the eye. That is some of the liquid you see on the eye lashes. Hubby was holding her eye open for me to take the picture. She is holding about half closed.

Any ideas what it might be? pinkeye? a poke from a branch?

From the picture it could be pinkeye, are you having fly problems? I haven't had a case in years if it is you need to get the flies under control now and isolate her until you get it cleared up.

This cow and the rest of the herd were vaccinated on 3/25 with Triangle 9. It includes IBR. They were also wormed using a generic ivermectin. They were wormed in the fall. They were sprayed for flys on 3/25 also. They had a good many flys before spraying. There are very few flys on them now. This cow is a 2 year old. She has been vaccinated regularly all her life.

Noy all strains of IBR is included in any given vaccine. A few years ago we had a problem wiht one heifer each year getting IBR that showed up as the off center white spot in the eye. Happened for 3 years and hav never had a problem with it before or since.

The vet, I'm squeamish about sticking needles in some places, injected an antibiotic directly into the membrane of the eyeball and I think maybe into the conjunctive tissue. I'll admit, I turned my head and darn near puked when he stuck the needle in the eyeball so I didn;t see everything he did. Funny but I had the same reaction everytime. The eye was almost totally clared up within 12 hours and totally clear to the point you couldn;t tell which heifer it was without looking at the ear tag in 24.

Looks like pinkeye to me. Furox spray and a shot of LA200 would be good for it if it is indeed pinkeye. We have started spraying for flys already. Bad here already. I'm gonna keep rabon out this year hopefully it will help.

Dun, I know the feeling. Same thing happened to one of mine last fall. She had it so bad, the vet sewed her eye shut for about three weeks.

Took this cow to the vet. She had cut her eye on some sharp object. Vet said it was a clean cut. Could not say for sure if she would lose vision of the eye. He injected antibotics in the eye lid and muscle around the eye so that when she blinks it treats the eye ball. The white spot in the picture is a piece of the cornea that is now lose tissue.

We just built a pump house (water well) in their pasture. There are brick ties sticking out. Hubby thinks that is most likey what she got into. Brick ties will be covered in short order.

Maybe this will help someone avoid a similar problem.

this happend a couple of months back, i sprayed some sort of topical spray in it for a couple of days, cleared up and looks normal now.... she poked it on something but never could figure out what...

Looks like a corneal abrasion (from trauma) with surrounding corneal edema. Usually they clear on their own. If not in a week to ten days I would have the vet give an injection (subtenons) which is under the skin of the sclera (white part of eye) with steroids and that should do the trick. Hope this helps.
