Extreme?

Nice looking bull calf. I don't think he looks funny with his hind end taller than his front. It happens, but he does have a HUGE butt! Keep him for breeding?

Mike, have you ever put a bull in the Tifton bull test sale? They need some good chars there. The sale is dominated by Angus and Simmental. The one you're showing here most certainly would have the highest WW of any breed there. That, to me, is worth a lot. I can't form any kind of opinion on his conformation from the pics.

No I haven't. I get a letter from them every year but there are enough bull tests around here to get a cross section look at how I stand against the other breeds.

Bull tests aren't used as they were designed for in the beginning and have become simply a marketing tool.

Unless a test has a way to determine "Efficiency" (which will be the ONE most important factor in raising beef with the new feed prices) they are as useless as teats on a boar hog. IMHO.

Can't argue with you, Mike. The thing though that I like about bull tests or any bull sale for that matter involving 90 or 100 or more bulls is that you have them all together and can compare them each to the other. Makes it easier, for me anyway, to pick out the better ones.

I have never seen the point of testing apetite.

Over here in the face C tests (intensive feedlot test) the bullcalves wear electronic fobs identifying them at the feeder. The feeder is also a scale and measurements are taken when the bull enters and again when he leaves, so every bite he eats get weighed. The whole purpose of the test is the FCR and although the ADG is nice to brag about its worthless without knowing the cost of it.

His Long Bones (Femur, Tibia, Fibula, Ulna, Radius and Humerous, both right and left, as well as the rest of his skeletal bones, extended in proportion to his growth. His muscles ached in direct proportion to his accelerated development - UNTIL - they 'caught up' with his skeleton. He is now 60 years old, 6'4 inches tall - - and my second Son! When his Musculature System balanced out with his Skeletal System, his general appearance 'softened out', (molified) and he is a pretty good looking man right now! Of course, I am prejudiced!

The same Growth Factor conditions occur with other species - including cattle and horses.

Doc, your explanation is almost precisely how I try to
explain why it is very difficult to totally forage raise and finish a steer (within a reasonable age)that genetically should be a frame 6 or higher.....all those groceries go to frame instead of filling out muscle.

Jeanne I agree with you, however I would prefer frame 6 over frame 2 or 3. This one seems way to framy for me either way.

I realize that, however he doesn't look overly fat. So to carry that much weight without looking fat he has to be a little framy. It's always hard to tell, and that was an exaggerated estimate.

I measured him this morning. He has a 47.5" hip height at 229 days of age.

Anyway you figure it he's a frame 6.

He also has a 32 cm. scrotum which tells me that if he has this big of a scrotum at this young age he is an early maturing bull and will not be giant when mature.

That's EXACTLY why I posted his picture on here and referred to him as the extreme opposite of a funnel butt.

Somebody FINALLY got was I was talking about. :roll:

If his front matched his back end he would have to weigh 1,000-1,100 lbs at weaning, which ain't very likely.

WHAT DID I WIN? Round is better than chuck in my book so it works out alright. I guess some critters just have bigger butts than others. My old neighbor had a butt that would put that bull to shame but was not big at all through the shoulders.
