Well Doc,

I like your two post so well I have decided to send it to all the major ag colleges around the country. Texas A&M, Colorado, etc. I expect they will want lots of federal funding to study your theories. :D My tax $ at work. Truth is if you got a calf nursing with its tail going round and round [not sure witch direction] its a good sign. Something like watching your whole bunch of calves running around the pasture in circles or whatever with their tails in the air. We call it frisking. A very good sign of healthy happy critters.

I simply think the tail wagging creates a gyroscopic effect that keeps the calf from falling down while sucking with his eyes closed. :P :lol: Thus, the more milk that is traveling down the esophagus, the faster the tail must wag to counter balance the extra weight of the milk on his/her front feet.

Add to that the constant swallowing which upsets the inner ear and throws the natural balancing effect out of synchronization.

Mike, in the animal body the phenominal and extraordinary physical, chemical and neurological processes which combine to activate and stimulate life are awe inspiring to say the least! One of those behaviors is referred to as "Synesthesia" - which definition is-"..a sensation in one part of the body when another part is stimulated". As the life-giving ecstatic emotion of milk coursing through the calf's upper digestive system stimulates the Autonomic Nervous System (Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Branches normally performing as antagonists), the distal end of the spinal cord responds appropriately, thereby causing a "rotational reactive syndrome" response, demonstrated as an involuntary 'twisting and rotating of the.....hind quarters and tail - a response MOST human beings are unable to manifest!

The incessant deglutition to which you referred does NOT upset the inner ear - thereby throwing the natural balancing effect out of synchronization - this being due to the synergistic functions between the stapes (stirrup), the malleus (the hammer) and the incas (anvil) located medially to the tympanic membrane. :roll: The labyrinth, or inner ear, assists in the maintaining of equlibrium, working in congress with the cochlea and the auditory, or Eighth Cranial nerve. This is a very sensitive and complex mechanism, - however, swallowing milk does not intrude upon the equilibrium of the calf.

HOWEVER - I feel that your hypothesis regarding the 'gyroscopic effect relating to. . ."sucking with the eyes closed" and retaining one's equilibrium at the same time offers some fascinating postulates! :shock: The "Laws of Levers" incorporated in the science of Physics - that of dealing with properties, changes and interactions of matter such as balance, leverage and stability elicits at this moment a case in point:
Envision the nursing calf; superimpose over this image a likeness of a First Class Lever - the calf's head being the 'weight', the calf's front legs being the 'fulcrum', and the hindquarters - including the tail - being the 'effort'. As the calf nurses, the head presses ( or STRIKES firmly on occasion) against the udder(weight), the front legs (fulcrum or fixed point) stabilizes the calf's body, and the hindquarters...and 'tail'...(gyroscope) acting as a stabilizing force, enabling Nature to take it's rightful course.

Dang, that shoots my theory all to he..er I mean to bits. I thought it was because she was letting her milk down so fast, it was pushing him, or her away, so they spun their tail to push themselves forward to stay in contact with mama's faucet.

OK DOC, I accept your review and fine analysis. But I still believe the swallowing upsets the balance............

Why else would a calf "Hunch", or hit the cows udder with his nose periodically except to help regain his equilibrium?

If you will notice a calf will "hunch" the cow's udder more often with the less milk available, in other words, towards the end of a sucking session.

Explain this phenomenon. ;-)

Has your theory been validated at the NASA "Jet Propulsion Laboratory"?
