It can't be more screwed up than Texas everything here revolves around TAKs test and attendance and thats it.
I won't even go into the school districts along the river, I don't even know how what they are doing is legal.

Not all education has to be got at a public school teach a kid to read and give them a good book and they will never be alone. You hit the nail on the head it goes back to being responsible.

My daughter had a father come to her couple weeks ago it was getting to be fair time, and his son was failing math. He wanted to know if his kid could do extra credit to get his grade up. My daughter asked why he was concerned with it now and had ignored her phone calls, email's and notes since the first three weeks of school.
The school system is about getting federal money.
We have school districts in this state along the Rio Grande educating Mexican citizens that cross over the border every morning and go home every evening.
Now this doesn't bother me if the child is wanting to learn, but on there dime not mine. The school districts are getting federal tax dollars for attendance and tax dollars for free meal program.
People we have got to wake up we are about entitle ourselves to the poor house.
It is not just education take the mortgage mess we have 6% of the outstanding loans in foreclosure so 94% are paying their loans like responsible people should.
So we are asking Congress to fix 6% of these loans to people who shouldn't have gotten one in the first place to be paid for by the American taxpayer at a cost of billions. This has pork barrel all over it.

Cut off the federal state money see just how long these school districts keep non Americans on the books.
Don't bail out these bad loans and maybe we will get back to some financial responsibilty.
There are commercials everyday on TV good credit, bad credit, no credit, doesn't matter come on down and we will put you in a new car. Banks were giving out home loans to people with no money down, poor credit . I saw one couple on TV crying about making there house note the bank had financed them with zero down in a 300,000 dollar house on a 40,000 dollar income. They should have never qualified for the loan.

The sad thing about the mortage mess is the bail out is not going to help the people losing the house, instead it will be a bail out of the lenders who let people have loans they should not have.The lenders made these loans, let them deal with them, if they survive they will use better busness practices in the furture.
As for our schools we have some truly great teachers,and some who just want a pay day. If a child that wants to learn gets lucky enough to hook up with a teacher who wants to teach that child will learn.

Like I said, we have students who are proud they are only failing two classes our of eight. Where are their parents? I would have been ashamed of those grades and my sons know better. I expect A's and B's and no less. If you set the bar high, kids will meet your expectations. i was always a poor math student, I won't lie, and I was really glad that my kids were good at it, because I was afraid I would not have been able to help them. But I was prepared to find someone who could if they needed it. Ignorance seems to be all the rage.

I know a lady who was planning on going back to school. She has an associate's degree and wanted to go back to get a full degree. She had several student loans she had not repayed or tried to repay. When she went to apply for financial aid again, she was told she would have to repay at least one of her loans to get aid again.

She was pretty miffed. I say, good for the loan folks. Why should the Feds loan her anymore money when she had no intentions of repaying her previous loans?

BTW, she got back almost 6K on her taxes this year. She could have used some of that money, not all, but at least some, but she refuses. That says a lot about where her values really are.

My ex and I both paid as we went in college. I had scholarships, which helped. But we owed no money at the end.

I earned a little thing they call "Dress Blues" and then was later rewarded with college money. I paid mine off first and then got the money.

On school systems...my wife and I scroung every penny to have enough to send our kids to private school and I am thankful for it.

And you keep scrounging and keep sending them to the private school. And as they get older and start to complain about how they are missing out on the experience of attending a public school with all of their peers, turn a deaf ear to it. I'm being sincere here. If I had it to do over again, my daughter would've stayed in private school. She's turned out wonderfully well now, but there were times...Lord, there were times.

RBB and CB I won't get started about what is happening in my son's school, but it is really bad when you have to spend a large amount of money to pay for tutoring to get your child caught up with the rest of their class. Only heard twice from his teacher.
Put him in special ed; put him in special ed.

My son is going to tutoring online. he is doing reading and math. Found out last week that he did not understand some of the basics. Yes I blame myself.
Doing what we can to get him to the level that he needs to be at.

I Luv Herfords the thing is you like alot of us take the responsabilty for seeing your kid is geting caught up. To many people today want to blame every thing and every body else. Yes there is alot of problems with the school systems teachers are required to cover a set amount of material a year, Instead of making sure the kids learn what they have covered. It has been a little over 30 years since i was in school things has sure changed alot, and not much for the better that i can see. You are doing what you got to do keep his nose to the grind stone he will get there, now you no where he is having trouble and you can see the progress. And i don't have any dought you will be keeping a closer eye on things. It all about being responsable for our children, if we don't do it nobody else will.

Well my kids went to parochial school and got a great education. The local public school was the pits to say the least even with the tax dollars I still had to pay into it every year.

Most of the sub-prime mortgage mess was due to greedy mortgage brokers, and enough people wanting to buy junk bonds, and that is exactly what they got. Junk. Most commercial banks are not feeling the effects of the increased foreclosure. Some of the bigger banks that have a large secondary mortgage department, i.e. Bank of Amercia, are losing money and writing off loans. Most of your small community banks are just the same as they were before this all hit the fan.

The dumbest thing to me as a lender is why anyone would finance 100% of anything, let alone a house. These people have no real money invested in the property, so they just walk away from it when things get bad. All they are out is the money that they did pay for the few months they had a loan. And most of these loans should have NEVER been made in the first place.

Bandit, very true. Back when I was a "money lender" as some would say, we made darn few 90% loans and mostly 80% on home loans.....75% on acreage. People have to have something to lose it seems in order to be responsible. And we qualitfied them...to well sometimes. But we didn't have one foreclosure every 3 years either. We did purchase a lot of Mtg. backed securities but I dont' know what name these subprime things were marketed under or if they were originated by small local banks and then sold to the big cats....can't imagine anyone buying them even heavily discounted. A far higher risk investment than even buying packages of student loans.

But...a lot of this subprime crap was almost mandated by congress..But then there's always a buzzard looking for a free meal.

We went through that with my oldests who is 14 almost 15. She got to expierence the bathrooms at the local county high school and we haven't had to deal with that anymore. I thought it was funny that that simple thing turned her off that bad. We had dealt with it for some time.

I'd say your right. I'd say most of them around here don't live on a farm either.

Teachers are taught how to teach in college. They are taught in prescribed ways. They are all basically taught the same way, everywhere. If a kid does not fit into the prescribed mold of what a kid should be and how a kid should learn, then they pick up the "Special Education" label, or the "Emotionally Disturbed" label, or the "Discipline Problem" label. Add to that the tremendous pressure to get kids to pass standardized tests mandated by the Federal Government, and the pressures that parents bring to bear on schools, the pressure to win, the pressure to spend monies in certain ways, paying teachers and paying for programs... You can understand the bind schools are in.

We have to change the way we teach teachers to teach. We have to get them into the classrooms sooner. The last thing an education student does is to student teach. They should he doing it all along. We also have to change the way we measure what a child has learned or not learned. Not an easy thing to do when you think of it.

I also think that schools should be free to set limits and rules and be able to stick with them, without worrying about Little Johnny's mother calling the news because the school made him get a hair cut. Make a set of rules regarding dress, attendance and conduct and then stick to your guns and not back down. You have to have a strong foundation in order to build anything lasting on top. Set the rules, gut it out, and see what happens over two years time.

I agree with most of what you are saying here. But there are teachers out there that do know what the problems are and how to correct them. They know how to teach the students that are outside the box. So why don't they? The states have rules. The government has rules. The schools must follow them or their funding is cut.
The saddest part is that a lot of very smart kids, that don't fit in the box, will not receive the higher learning they deserve. The entire system needs to be redone.
