Uh, Alice. He didn't say they was "northern raised" engineers. Just engineers. I suppose it's possible that southern boys and girls, even Texas boys and girls, could possibly become engineers.

The joke I told was just the way the ag school used to gig the engineering school. Actually, some of my best friends are engineers--but you didn't hear me say that.

The only real problem with the northern bunch, that I like, is their dress. Those engineers wear the same type of jeans my wife would wear. Calvin Klein Jordache etc. You never see them in wranglers. Now there are a few ot them that are really good people, but it is really uncomfortfortable to go to a business luncheon here in Texas with a bunch of dudes dressed like my wife or daughters.

If you give those guys subtle hints, it doesn't do much good. To them, a man dressed the way we do in the south represents "no class". Well if you don't have class and don't have manners, wearing women's jeans isn't going to help any.

They love Bar-B-Que and we hit Hammond's often (Alice you know the place I'm sure). Hammond's was ranked #3 in the U.S. for years. They have sawdust floors there, peanut butter pie, and a host of southern fixings. It is one of those places you northerner's call "Red Neck". Now if you can just imagine me, knowing all the good ole boys in the place, walking in to the restaurant with a bunch of sissy dressed funny talking people, it just is a very uncomfortable thing. Our culture is pretty much foreign to them.

Now it really gets humorous when they decide to hit the Honky Tonks. Generally they get them a hat after a few years. Then they get the boots and buckle. But they still wear those jeans like my wife would wear. They stick out like a sore thumb and you really don't want to be seen hanging out with dudes in ladies jeans. People might get the wrong idea about you.

Reminds me of a time that my cousin had on a pair of them Girly Jeans on, Jordaches were popular at the time. They had no back pockets. We were over at a family get together and my Grandpa saw him on with those Jeans. He told him to go get those JordAsses off that no grandson of his was going to wear a pair of pants that do not have a back pocket. I remember his mom getting mad, she thought they were such a cute pair of jeans. After that every time my grandpa saw one of us kids, he would ask if we had any of those Jordasses on. :lol:

Oh yeah, I know Hammond's, and I know Calvin's et al on men in that place could cause some conversation. Fortunately, eating there at lunchtime keeps the conversation a little "lower"...nobody's had a few beers at that time of the day.

Now, wearing that attire to a honky tonk in Fort Worth I guess would be much preferable than to say...Mingus. :shock: I would definitely urge them to not dress that way in Mingus. Or, else, let me know when they're headed that way...I'd want to watch. I've always said that if you really want to take someone that thinks they know it all down a peg, set 'em on a bar stool in Mingus...it'd be worth the price of admission.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people think the clothes they wear or the cars they drive give them class. If you have to try that hard then you probably ain't got it and probably never will. Character and class can't be bought. You either got it or you don't.

Fashion sense isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think engineers. Probably they wear what their wives bought them to wear and don't think twice.
I didn't know they even sold Calvin Klein or Jordache jeans anymore. They may not have wives and they are wearing what they still have from college.

When I sent that I thought, wait, he didn't say northern engineers. I just happen to know that many engineers there at Comanche Peak are from the north. I live close to Comanche Peak and know people that work there and have worked there for a very long time.

But, I shouldn't have made that distinction. My bad...

Alice, I heard the term "cedar whackers" in deep South Texas where it refered literally to folks who make a living clearing cedar trees. You can usually tell who they are as they usually are missing several digits.

Backhoe; you hit the nail on the head when you referred to culture (in reference to fashion), but also in that there are people from many backgrounds on the forum.
In my community we called a spade 'a spade', but diplomacy was the key to stating your point of view without being offensive it seems we lived in a more considerate pleasant society and I don't remember there being any cissies in our community, we raised our families through drought, civil war and international isolation without compromising our principles!
I have a thick enough skin to not be bothered by some of the attitudes, but I wonder if the cultural aspects prevent people from other nationalities from wanting to join?

I don't think he meant anything racial by it. I've heard the term 'calling a spade a spade" many times. It refers to the garden tool, not a race of people. It's kind of like saying "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck." The racial slur "spade" refers to the suit of cards. At least that's the way I've always understood it.

Funny how words can change meanings over time. Remember when a gay person just meant that they were happy? Has a completely different meaning now.

Was watching a taped Tonight Show today with Jerome Bettis on it which for you that do not follow the great Steelers he is a black Running back that is retired. He used the term calling a spade a spade on the show. He was referring to reporting on players performance each week as he is not a commentator.
