you know if he was one of us "citizen Texans"he would be fined for driving around hunting quail.the story reports he and 2 other hunters spotted a covy of quail, got out of the vehicle and shot.thats not ethicle and its certainly not hunting.

I assume they were on a private ranch. If so, what's the big deal?
well for starters youre not much of a hunter to ride around in a vehicle spot your game get out and shoot.im an advid hunter always have and long as i can get around i always will.that type of "hunting " is what gives the "tree huggers" fuel to aid in their "cause".even though i hunt various species of game i do appreciate the animal im hunting.ive taught my children who also are advid hunters that the animal they have just killed should be respected and appreciated.i feel that true sportsmen who want to promote their cause shows the same.

Yeah and you don't hunt deer under a feeder or food plot and you don't ride a four wheeler so when that Boone and Crockett Buck steps in front of you on that four wheeler you can't shoot it. When you get back to 2 sticks and a string you can call yourself a hunter until then your no different than the guy at the slaughter house. Man it is so sporting to shoot a deer at 200 yards out of a heated stand with a scope that makes him look like he is in the stand with you while you have trained him to come to feed for months.

The deer population is out of control. More need to be killed.

Well call yourself a deer killer, animal controller,Atilla the Hun or whatever but not a hunter. Funny your way to harvest game is ok but the other guys is wrong. If the state of Texas says you can kill 4 deer I don't care if you jump out of a helicopter with a sharp stick, or feed them till there pets and shoot them. Just don't consider yourself a hunter.

I would say that the ranch owner reported it because that is what he/she should have done.

My understanding is she reported it to the newspaper not the sheriff's department.

An accident is called an accident for a reason, that's true. Just like the day care workers that leave the babies in the vans. They are called accidents.

I would come near calling shooting someone in the side of the face at close range an "Extreme lack of judgement to be dealing with anything as dangerous as a gun." "Extremely neglegent" says it with more class than "stupid or idiot." They should have their license taken away at the very least. Too many people go hunting that never shoot the others they hunt with. I call these situations "careful and responsible." I only know one man that was shot by another with buck shot, but there was alcohol involved. Now that was stupid on both their parts. This man only went to the emergency room and had a few of the pellets removed that were shallow in his face and upper body. He was fairly close, but went home immediately. The guy that was drunk hid for several days to get the alcohol out of his system and the other man didn't press any charges.
But this was before the laws got more strict. (several years ago)

For the "other lawyer," to be in stable condition, still in the hospital, he had to be real close to Cheney if he was using bird shot in the shells.

Some people used to hunt across the road from our house when I was a kid. They would shoot toward the house and the shot would hit the side of the house and the windows. Another stupid accident. We had to stay inside when they were out there because, that is just what is to be expected of people that don't take guns seriously. Didn't do much good to talk to them about it. They would come back and do the same thing when my parents weren't at home. I do own six guns by the way.

I voted Bush/Cheney, but it still doesn't keep me from calling it the way I see it. He screwed up big time! It does change my opinion about him if he said the other man should have yelled first. I thought they were bird hunting.
The excuse he gave says a lot about him. Lack of character. I would have said, "I just turned around and shot and I didn't realize he was behind me. I am so sorry for doing it." Only a lawyer could get by with saying, "He didn't yell first."

You go to a lawyer with that BS and it will be going through the court systems for years, and the lawyers charging you about $500 every two months just for opening the letters that go back and forth between the offices. They call it "Reviewing and filing." At $220 an hour, this is a $45.00 fee for each piece of paper going across the desk.

I would turn down any invitations from Cheney on the hunting deal. Sheeesh!

They only let me do it during hunting season. You'll understand if I take the DNR's word over yours.

Also, I never said the other guy's way of hunting was wrong. Quit making assumptions.

Sounded to me like they were both negligent in the situation and being they are friends I don't see any lawyers gettting involved in this situation. I see it as a very unfortunate incident which the VP no doubt regrets deeply and he will have to live with this for the rest of his life. I still don't see the need for the media splattering it all over the papers and news broadcasts for the next week. Like I said, if it would have been anyone else you'd never of heard about it at all.

I don't believe these situations can be justly compared. A day care worker is responsible for the well being of that child. It is their job. That is neglect. In the case of this hunting accident, these are both adults capable of watching out for themselves. There is blame to be assumed by both of them.

The public has a little more interest in the useless, negligent accidents of people that make decisions for the rest of us. We don't need any help with creating bigger disasters on bigger scales. We like to know that he can think ahead of time and react accordingly. Mostly when it concerns the population and not one hunting buddy.
I bet if he had this accident during an election, it would have made the numbers change.

I don't see how this has anything to do with his ability to make political decisions. If the public considered such things then why is Kennedy still in office?

I hope you're not really a betting man.

lakading, I'm not sure where you are coming from on safety. How do you suggest that each partner be responsible to keep from getting shot by his buddy in the field.
1. Ask him not to shoot you before you get out of the truck.
2. Carry a boom-box with latest #1 rap for location identification
3. Take swat team gear for protection
4. Hunt from a tank
5. Sing or whistle loudly at all times.
6. Strap back to back with other hunter so each of you
will be positioned on opposite sides
7. Just be sure not to go hunting with lakading or Cheney
since their hunting safety is not the same as yours

If you're not concerned with your own safety at all times while hunting, maybe you shouldn't go.

lakading, please give me some pointers on being safe with another person in the field, while bird hunting. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about. Learning something new everyday is a good thing.

I was just eluding to the same pricipal as defensive driving. Always be looking out for the other guy. It is a good lesson for all hunters (or animal killers/population controllers :D ). Whether it was the V.P. involved or not.

A6gal, in my eyes, when he went hunting and had what we call "buck fever" it tells me something about his brain cells. Usually you get that from young immature hunters that shoot first, think later. Then the excuses started of why the other hunter got himself shot in the side of the face. Don't need BS as part of a campaign strategy.
In my eyes, I would not put that in office. I would not have put Kerry in office either. Another BS'er.
Yep, there are those that vote for Kennedy. But it didn't come from here, and I have yet run across anyone in my area that would vote for him.
In your area they might vote for him and in his area, for some reason, he gets re-elected. I am not sure how that process takes place, but I have my own thoughts about it.

I wouldn't put Cheney in the same class as Kennedy. At least Cheney has taken responsibility and expressed remorse for what happened. I'm not a betting person either, but I would lay money on the fact that NO ONE native to my area of Texas would vote for Kennedy.

Any responsible hunter knows there are others in the woods and watches out for himself as well as for what others might be doing. No matter how responsible someone is there is always a chance of an accident.

Just like driving a car on the highway. You are responsible for your actions as well as watching out for the actions of others. Even so, there is a chance someone will let their guard down for a split second and an accident can happen.

I agree with you 100% on looking out for the other guy. I drive for a living and it has kept me safe for 20 years. But at times you have to look away when bird hunting. I am thinking about how I used to watch the man across the road when he was fencing. You would see his hammer fall, then in a second or two, you would hear the "hit." I am not sure, but seems the sound of the buckshot would be heard first depending on how far away he was, but in the case, he would just pepper you. But at close range, I think the burning of the shot would let you know what happened when you heard the gun go off. I am afraid that you have no control of the other person in the field with you if you are seriously bird hunting, other than knowing his safety values. I might elect going hunting by myself.
Sure don't want to go hunting with "Low Tax Lomax."
