Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" in a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday after he was shot by Cheney on a ranch in south Texas, said Katharine Armstrong, the property's owner.

He was described as in stable condition by Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi.

Armstrong in an interview with The Associated Press said Whittington, 78, was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest during the incident which occurred late afternoon on Saturday

I just read about it. It said that the "other lawyer" he was hunting with, came from behind him and didn't announce himself. Cheney shot at another flock and shot this lawyer in the side of the face.
I didn't know you were supposed to scream out where you are when hunting. I guess the "here I am" announcement issue will pass for the city dwellers concerning hunting, but we know that Cheney screwed up royally and if he was one of us, he would be in cow hockey up to his pacemaker. I guess he will slide right on into home on this one. So, now this rules out the orange vests the hunters wear, and paying attention to who and what is around you. Now everyone will have to wear airhorns.

Now we know that Clinton and Cheney think alike.
"I did not........."

That is the most insanely rediculous thing I've ever heard. A hunting accident is a hunting accident.

I assume they were on a private ranch. If so, what's the big deal?

well for starters youre not much of a hunter to ride around in a vehicle spot your game get out and shoot.im an advid hunter always have and long as i can get around i always will.that type of "hunting " is what gives the "tree huggers" fuel to aid in their "cause".even though i hunt various species of game i do appreciate the animal im hunting.ive taught my children who also are advid hunters that the animal they have just killed should be respected and appreciated.i feel that true sportsmen who want to promote their cause shows the same.

You have to remember that there are cultural differences on how things are hunted. In some areas dogs are used for deer in others that's considered evil. Riding in/on a vehicle and dismounting and approaching dogs on point is a method that's used on some of the plantation type of quail hunts. Busting your butt and hiking into the back country to hunt deer is the way it is in some areas, others you sit in a tree stand and wait for the deerto come by. It'sno different then bait fishing and fly fishing, different places have different ways.

ok, ya'll really need to READ the press releases. The hunting partner hung back after shooting a quail to find it because they were having issues with it and he told them to go on ahead. We he came back up behind them and was in the direct line of the sun and all but "invisible" Cheney shot at a bird in that general direction and peppered him on the follow through.

Still no excuse! Next time ol Dick asks me hunting I think I'll pass

NOT giving it as an excuse, but saying it's a lot different than the load up in the truck story that's going around.

I won't criticize your grammar and punctuation if you don't criticize the way people hunt.

Hunting off a vehicle (quail rig) is common here in south Texas. You don't actually shoot from the rig but move from one field to the next on the vehicle. It's easier on the dogs, it's easier on the quail population and easier on older gentlemen that tend to be the majority of quail hunters in this area. Getting peppered on a quail hunt is probably more common than anyone would guess. I have a couple of friends that are quail guides and both have had incidents where either a hunter or dog has been peppered. The guide constantly reminds the hunters of safety but it's always dangerous to hunt in groups. Everyone has to be constantly aware of where the others are and one slip is all it takes for an accident to occur. My guess is the only reason the ranch owner reported this incident was to profit from the publicity.

I would say that the ranch owner reported it because that is what he/she should have done. Someone else along the line probably saw who was involved and called out the media dogs. Hey, that's their job.
