"Depopulated"?

Read an article in a BEEF* newsletter about finding TB in a Minnesota herd:

"Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) officials said this week that bovine tuberculosis (TB) was detected in a Roseau County beef cattle herd when a USDA veterinarian detected suspicious lesions in a five-year-old cow. The animal was traced back to northern Minnesota using a "back tag" placed on the cow prior to being sold for slaughter. The herd of origin was quarantined, tested, and the entire herd of 900 depopulated".

I assume that means the entire herd was destroyed. That sounds like a pretty tough pill to swallow for the owner. I don't suppose there is any compensation involved?

I'm sure the guvment paid him some sort of compensation since they ordered the de-population. I do know that insurance DOES NOT PAY in this situation .

Back in the 60's during the "Bang's" eradication program, a cow that tested positive was branded and had to be sold as a canners. Thousands and thousands of those $1500 Holsteins brought $75-$100. The check from the state was $25 each.

The Nazi's did it in the 1930's and 40's. The wholesale slaughter of undesirables ie: special treatment, resettlement, final solution.

The Bosnian massacres of the 80's and 90's ie: Ethnic Cleansing!

and now the slaughter of cattle herds, ie: depopulation! give me a break call it what it is..............

Not that I am against that cattle destruction, as it is most certainly needed, but my point is why can't we just call it what it is! slaughter of a herd. destruction of a herd. something mre realistic besides 'depopulation' which sounds go gentiel.... after all cow crap is cow crap, ya know? .......ok, off my soap box. :cboy:

No joke I was one that got wiped out in the Bangs eradication of the seventies, hurt like hell and I didn't get a government check either.

We wouldn't want to upset the urban housewife and her husband who don't have a clue, most times, now would we?

Even slaughter houses have fallen victim to the all the people that are too sensitive, and think everyone needs to be more politically correct. They are now Harvesting Plants, and they no longer slaughter animals, the Harvest them. Its such a joke...

yup that reminds me... when ever my better half and i talk about transplants of human organs, she refers to the removal of same from donors as "harvesting' well, my opinion, lets get back to plain ol real descriptions.... one thing I dont tend to understand either, our children see thousands of violent crimes on the boob tube , but we are now so sensitive about ppl's feelings that we have to cover up the fact that we kill other humans, and animals in real life? but as long as it's 'fiction' it's ok to show gore? Agree. Kids nowadays are "too overprotected" by parents & others. The boob tube, friends, movies, video games, all show an active fantasy life (aka "la la land") as well as extreme violence. Even the "cartoons" are more and more violent. Kids need to learn about the nitty-gritty, nuts and bolts of life, not some "let's not injure the child's personality" mentality by keeping realism away from them.

Most of the children in our grandkids class do not know where eggs or milk comes from not to mention hamburger, chicken and ham. We live on the fringes of the city and can see the encroachment (have to sell a few acres to the state for a freeway comming through) but have tailored our beef marketing to accomodate the city consumers....we process now, seems to sell more beef than when we just slaughtered on the farm, still on the farm but our beef processing specialist handles the task...(he is our meat cutter also) All-in-all I guess it is all in who you are talking to how we speak and the terms we use.

Caustic - I have seen this crap invading our society, our schools, our churches, our entertainment, - everything we see or hear or do is dominated by these Ultra- Left-Wing Liberals and their "gotta' be FAIR" attitude to every damned splinter group that any wimp coward greedy grasping worthless lazy spoiled brat idiot can conjur up to gain political control of the masses! Ok we are kinda gettin off the original subject here, but... hey we are here now.......one thing that I think 95% of the people on these particulair boards share is this.......
Farming is not leisure lifestyle It's d*mned hard work.
We are hard working.
Few of us are insanely rich.
We have worked for everything we have aquired and would really like to keep it.
We are tired of the wannabees that want to have , but dont want to work for it.
We are tired of those that surround us and want to dictate how we are to operate just so they can live in a picture perfect life.......ie......no on farm processing. no manure spreading,no tractors on the roads, no bad smells or sounds of cattle bellowing after 9pm etc.

Just as important as anything else, an undeniable love for the wholesomeness of life, our families, and our country, right wrong or otherwise.

All in all, I think I am describing a somewhat conservative person. :cboy:
