Deadly Bulls

I sure learned something new today. Never dreamt dairy bulls would be mean, I had assumed they'd be gentle like the cows. We never trust our beef bulls, like someone previous said it's the gentle ones that kill/hurt you.Valerie

we had a mean calf last year.my brother was doing something in the pasture an the calf charged him a few times out of the blue.he did the same thing at weaning.so brother busted him upside the head.then the calf turned an went into the corral.

As the neighbor at the dairy found out last week. Do you have any idea how high a Holstein bull can toss a 650 ATV?

nope but as a kid i seen a gert bull, Tbone our school bus and knock it up on about 2 wheels.. we road home with are uncle, and were behind it as it pulled in and went across the cattle gaurd

As the neighbor at the dairy found out last week. Do you have any idea how high a Holstein bull can toss a 650 ATV?

No idea about the ATV but saw one that weighed about 1800 throw another one of about 1200 lbs. completely over his head and back one day. Needless to say the fight was over.

I figured dairy bulls would be at the top of the list, but a mamma cow can get you as well. A friend of ours lost his father last year he was tagging a calf his dad was with him and the mamma turned on them and got his father. I had a mamma cow get me about five years ago she broke five ribs my shoulder and my foot needless to say I am very careful around mamma's now.

I know someone who uses a Jersey bull as a gomer bull. They picked a Jersey because they believe they have one of the strongest libidos of any breed. Don't know if that is true or not but that might have something to do with their temperament

I have always heard if there was ajersey bull within 10 miles not a female of any species was safe

I have a Jersey bull. I don't know that I could scientifically say they have the most libido, but I can say he has plenty to go around. I have been around angus, charlais, herford and this guy has more drive than any of them. He will work a cow for a full 24 hours when she is in heat. I know for a fact he can smell and/or hear a neighbor cow in heat for 1 mile or better and he will do all he can to get over there. 5 strands of barb wire won't stop him. He went up against my neighbors black angus that had a good 400 lbs on him. The only way I have found to hold him is with a small polywire, on or not, it will stop him dead in his tracks. He is scared to death of electric fence. I don't know why. He is not mean yet, but I keep a very close eye on him. This is his last year - maybe one more tops. He was raised with a herd of Angus and was the smallest so he got his butt whooped a lot by other bulls. I think that is why he doesn't challenge me and why he isn't as mean as what I have heard Jersey bulls are. But I still won't get in the pen with him anymore than I have to. I can't say they are the meanest from my personal experience, but I sure wouldn't trust him. I would agree that they are very fertile and have lots of libido. I joke with my wife that if he ever got out from our place, he could service all the cows in this county. :lol:

I had 2 Jersey gomer bulls. 1 was no problem at all. Of the 2 he was the least active on the cows. The other bull was a little different story. He associated me as a threat or competition. A crack across the nose when he was about 1 1/2 years old kept him away for there after. If anyone has ever read some of my previous posts about not inflecting pain as it may only lead to more aggressiveness, this may seem hypocritical. When a bull is in the attack mode (protecting his claim to his herd of cows) I will do what ever is necessary at the time. This is not much different than 2 bulls deciding dominance over the herd. There is a lot of difference between working cattle in a lot and the way they act in the pasture. When in the pasture I always carried an electric fiberglass post when there was a bull around, of any breed.
I have read several posts on here about people being hurt or killed by mean bulls. I believe you may find, if there were statistics, that many more people have been hurt or killed by the gentle cows and bulls they thought they could trust.
