Have the steers separated from my bred cow and heifer-youngest related one has been weaned 3 months. I'll be danged if he didn't go hit the bar within 30 minutes of being out with mama. Back to opposite sides of the hotwire...🙄
Red steer is the 9 month old mama's boy, black heifer is his 20 mo old half-sister, 3 mo bred.
both half Aberdeen, half Brangus.

That's the way we do it too. learned the hard way a long time ago when a cow calved back just after letting a calf back in the field with its mother. Had to make sure the new calf got colostrum and had to get the older calf separated again.

Precisely why mine don't go back. The exception are the retained heifers, and they aren't reunited with the main herd until after they've calved when they're appx 2. Good luck with that hot wire!
So far they are very respectful-working better than barbed wire (he stuck his head through that). Need a bigger spot of land!
