Iam sure it been talked about before but what is the going rate to mow rake and roll a 4x5 roll of hay? I done a couple hundred rolls last year for a man and charged 15$ a roll. I have got several more people wanting to do there hay this year but I think Iam doing it to cheap maybe. I really enjoy making hay but Iam not into loosing money.

I pay $12 for rake and roll so at $15 including cutting you're a bit light.

I did a little math and here is what I come up with. I based it off of 20acres of good quality grass and 10.00 hr labor
5 hrs to mow 50.00
ted twice 2.85hr x2 57.00
Rake 1.5hrs 15.00
Bale 3 hrs 30.00
fuel 45 gal 90.00
2 rolls twine 30.00
--------------------------------------
total 272.00
3 bales acre 60 rolls 4.533 dollars cost per roll

I Deprecation and other cost could be figured in and 20bucks a roll is doable IMO

That scenario fits my field to a T. I have 20 acres that turns off about 60 rolls give or take. I think my highest yield was 77 one year when the orchard grass was on steroids.

Good calculation!!!

All it would take is one breakdown and all your profit is gone.

Personally all I would look at is the break down factor vs how much I stand to make . I personally wouldn't do hay for anyone but myself for that factor which is why I turn down a lot of bush hog jobs one busted tire or other break down and you did that job for free and your in the hole. Making money is a great thing but I weigh the pros and cons.

That is exactly what my neighbor told me. He stopped rolling my hay two years ago for that reason. I like his work so I offered him $25 per roll but he said his equipment was getting old and he didn't want it breaking down doing other people's hay. I told him, I fully understood.

Put him in charge of $150,000.00 worth of equipment he better have capable use of a brain. But price range of equipment used does reflect that cost. Used to never hear about hourly rates or bale per acre minimums. People wanting their hay made on fields yielding 1000 lbs an acre and less in 2011 changed that.

Btw...if I were to pay and use a guy making $10 an hour to help me custom bale....you better believe I would benefit the other $15 left on the table cause sooner or later he's going to cost me that in some way ot another.

Going rate here is $28 to $35 as far as I know.....and my hay is $65 a roll out of the barn....$30 for baling $25 in fertilizer couple bucks for storing, moving, taxes on the profit. ;-)
