cull cows

has anyone out there backgrounded cull cows? what kind of gain can they make off of stockpiled forage? when's the best time to buy, sell? :2cents: why do we become like those we criticize?

I would think that if you're culling them it would be best to ship them rather than put anymore time, effort, and money into them.

It's done quite a bit around here. They typically buy in late December and graze rye/ryegrass and through the spring on pasture. I would be worried about getting too many broke mouths.

how many pounds can they gain and how fast?

an old cow with fairly decent teeth wormed an on lush pasture could gain 2lbs a day or a tad more.cows have been known to gain weight fast on lush pastures.

How much gain they will have depends upon what type of condition they are in when you start. Large framed, body condition scores 4 or lower could gain 2-3 lbs/day. Small framed, BCS 5 or higher would gain very little.

youll loose money trying to put extra weight on a BCS 5 cow.you want them with a BCS of 3 to 4.
