I often debate if I should even continue putting up my own hay. Run more cows on the acres I've got, buy marginal/poor hay and supplement it with ddg.

I think if you have a reliable supply of cheap hay you can make it work.
 
It's been a long time since I put up enough hay to make it all the way thru. Thought I had this year, but I doubt it now.

Plenty of DDG right there in Hoptown. If you had the storage to buy a semi load at a time.

I've lately tried some feed made by someone called Protocol--pretty high $$ for what it is but the cows sure like it.

Protocol Technologies is owned by Dr. Jimmy Horner. They make good feed. He's a nutritionist and owner of the operation. He's loves to load feed up with probiotics and prebiotics which are good products but not always needed and also the main reason the feed is usually pretty pricey.
