I had seen Blue 10 minutes before the attack. He was laying by the shop door. I was walking to the feed area where I took pause to enjoy the weather and watch my cows laying contently in the hay-waste chewing their cuds. Suddenly, all their heads went up on "red alert". Ears straight out. One after another jumped quickly to their feet. One wheeled around and took off over the hill. Then the entire herd broke into a stampede on their way over the hill. I ran after them. At the crest of the hill, they all stood in a line. Peering with bodies at attention down into the holler below. At that moment, I heard blood curdling cries coming up from the holler. It was horrible and more so when the tone and quality of the voice was - Blue. I ran toward the sound. Down a steep wet hill side at breakneck speed. No Olympic athlete could have down it better or with more urgency. I was yelling Blues name with all the air in my lungs. I saw a dog below me in the creek bed and realized dogs were mauling Blue. As I got close, two of the dogs broke off and ran up the opposite hillside. Blue was still screaming. When I got within twenty yards, I saw a black dog biting Blue. Blue was backed under a log protecting his back and rear. When I got within twenty feet, the dog took off. Blue crawled to me and laid at my feet. I did not see a lot of blood but when I looked I saw numerous punctures. I carried him to the top of the hill. I put him in the trunk of the car and headed for the vet. When I got to the clinic, Blue could not raise himself. The vet, assistant and I worked on him for an hour. They had bitten him in the back of the of the neck, both upper front legs and in the thigh. The vet said his bones were not broken. He is on antibiotic, pain meds and anti-inflammatory.

My cows saved Blue. I did not hear the sound of the screams due to my hearing loss. If they had not gone into the red alert, got my attention focused on the commotion, Blue would be dead. I guess they have come to consider Blue part of the family

Maybe I'm a terrible person but I'd put traps or something out for this nasty group to get them if I couldn't be there...
I'd want them exterminated cause they've gone rogue.
Once in a while a group here will form that run deer, and that's enough to get them shot.
So much sadder when it's a companion. :(
I hope you won't have to worry about a cow that goes off on her own to calve. (More the new calf than cow of course)

Sorry to hear about Blue's attack and wish him a speedy recovery. I've noticed that my cows will often sleep in circles with the new calves in the center. When they stand looking the same direction something may need investigation.
 
Wishing Blue a full and fast recovery. Sounds like you need to thin some dogs down Ron one way or the other. On my neighbors place once I shot a coyote during turkey season, he yelped and made the most painful screaming I've ever heard. I didn't get to fire another shot to finish him for the cows. Those cows swarmed it and within seconds quietness had settled back in.

Sorry about blue but glad you got there in time. I suggest you carry a 12 gauge with you every where you go with some #1 buck in it and fix the problem as was said. They will be back next time they could make you or a calf the target please start carrying around your place.

You think they are strays or peoples dogs that pack up? Either I way I'd be goin Rambo on them!!!
 
Oh Ron, so glad that you got to Blue in time! Poor guy!
The others are right. As much as I love dogs, they have got to go. Animal control will usually come out and set traps for you, then come pick them up. That is a good option if you can't get shots off next to the cows. And if you only get one at a time shot, you still have to worry when the others will be return. Good luck!
 
Sounds like both you and Blue could use a couple of good stiff drinks....then get the gun and kill that trespassing black SOB.
 
Watching the cows can tell you a lot! Hope Blue recovers quickly.
I had a pair of dogs here that would wander through all the time.. I knew who's they were, and I sent 8 rounds on their arses and they were skidding in shyt and ran home... haven't seen them since, but next time I might not deliberately miss.. I hope for their sake they've learned their lesson.
 
As TB said, if you can only shoot one, shoot the black one and I doubt you'll see the second one again. If there's more than two in the pack you may need to get as many as possible. SSS.
 
So sorry this happened to Blue! This experience will probably change him somewhat, being such a smart and sensitive dog as you have described. His self confidence will probably be shaken. Bless those cows for giving you a clue so you could get there in time to keep it from getting even worse.

Those dogs are really bad news, usually dogs have a little respect for territory, Blue should have had home field advantage. That's what allowed our pomeranian to nip a much larger hunting dog in the butt and survive, the big dog just went faster because he knew he was out of his territory.

Have no fear. Our friend Inyati was protected as he balanced on a stump and performed a clitoral massage on Matilda to insure the AI would take IF natural service failed. :mrgreen:
