WHAT WOULD CAUSE A BLACK ANGUS HEIFER TO GET A BIG KNOT IN THE AREA THAT HANGS DOWN BETWEEN HER LEGS IN FRONT?We have 8 head of black angus on Sawyers farm in WV and 1 cow has a big knot in the front that hangs down between her legs. looking for some useful info before we decide to butcher her.
thankyou krazygal

Could be an abcess of some type. Get her up and feel it. If it has a fever or feels hotter than her it could be an abcess. It may be hard at first then go soft when it is ready to lance.

Anything else wrong with her? I'm thinking injury of some sort. May have gotten a sliver of some sort and then it formed a cyst.

Is it really a knot, or does the area just appear swollen and enlarged? If she's very well fed could be fat deposits in the dewlap area, which can get pretty substantial.
