I know there's been some crazy things happen in churches...even some shootings....but if I felt like I or anyone else there really needed to carry his pistol to church I'd be looking for another church.

TB it's not the church it's the nut's running around with a cause or high on crack.
Our service's have been interupted several times for people coming in off the hwy looking for help.
Some are legit some are pretty scary looking wanting some money to get a fix.
It is the second group that cause's worry when we tell them we wont give them money.
We will offer food and shelter to anyone in need not money, some get really mad.
I know what you're saying CB but can't remember ever having anyone come in wanting such things. I'm sure they come in during the week as we have a large food pantry as well as taking many down to one of the local places for lunch but we never give money. Do the same with those needing clothing etc. Maybe they just know we Catholics are usually the conservative "less affluent" group in the community and there wouldn't be much to steal anyway

I know two people who were in attendance when this happened.

I can't believe TB does not remember this.
Did I say I didn't remember it? Of course I do. There have been several around the country. Would pistols in the pew have stopped it?? I doubt it....might have got a few more people killed from flying lead...I still don't believe it justifies wearing a pistol to church. If I get that scared I'll stay at home and watch it on TV.

Nothing wrong with wearing a pistol in church. We can wear one in most other businesses down here so a church is no different. It takes just one meth head to walk in the door and get crazy to change a few minds on carrying a pistol. People shouldn't have to die to figure out that protecting oneself is a wise choice. But then Osteen isn't half bad and you can get the message for free on tv. No fuss, no muss.

I never go anywhere that I don't carry. Unless I get called for jury duty. No sense in taking the test qualifying and paying the fee's. I have had CCW since it became law in Texas. I used to never worry about getting knocked in the head for 30 or 40 buck's in my wallet. Our country has changed drastically in the last twenty years. Closing down every pawn shop in the state of Texas would help a lot in taking the crack heads source of cash away. I can understand other's feeling's on this sensitive issue. I hope I go to my grave never needing to let anyone see my weapon. Rita opened my eye's wide I went to open carry for about a month.

I should get my permit . I'm just hard headed and don't want government knowing more than they need to . People did some strange things during Rita . I encountered a few trying to evacuate . That's the reason I decided to stay home durning hurricanes . No telling what would have happened at that gas station if I didn't have a gun . I didn't like knowing I may have to shoot someone . You never know who is around or what they want to do .

I have my CHL. Always open carry on the place. Conceal everywhere else. I do a lot of work in schools though, so I can't carry on premises there. My wife is our church secretary and has to do church "benevolence". The same characters make the circuit and try to work the system all the time. My wife keeps the front doors locked if there are no male staff members in, since our church is just out of the edge of town. The last secretary let one guy in when she was alone, and when she refused him help (he was a repeater), he threatened to hurt her. Luckily the pastor happened to drive up at that moment. They always reek of cigarettes which means $400 per person per month goes for that in their family...and $400-$800 would pay a lot of bills.

CB is 100% right about closing the pawn shops.

Here's a story that was on AOL news when I signed on tonight:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/1 ... d%3D135239

Since I live in the only state in the union that doesn't have some form of concealed carry, I don't know much about the laws. If this happened in your state, could they take this guy's permit away even if he's not charged with a crime?
Since this incident apparently happened recently, law enforcement may still be investigating -- charges could still be filed. In my state, in my county: Not likely the permit would be pulled if no charges were filed. Here, if charges were filed and there was a conviction, he could be (as a term of probation) not allowed to keep a firearm, which would make the current permit question moot. And a permit wouldn't be re-issued if there was a firearms restriction on his record.

Went to a church once that had a Sunday offering of about $25k per week. The head usher kept a carry .38 in his back pocket. Thought it was a bit strange but after I thought about it, it's stranger that they haven't been held up.

I'm just not sure about a pawn shop being a good place to get rid of hot items.
I have a close friend who owns a pawn shop, and when an item is pawned it must have a model and serial number, you must present a current drivers liscense, and the pawn broker has to make three copies of the transaction. One goes to the guy who pawns the item, one to the local law inforcement, which is picked up weekly and one remains with the pawnbroaker.
Seems like it would be a sure way to get caught.
And you have to go through a gun check in order to buy a gun at a pawn shop.
Just my :2cents:

Oh they got caught alright Cal. They used their DL to pawn my stuff. 3 rejections of the case back to the deputies by the DA. Then 6 months later the DA wanted they pawn clerks to pick them out of a line up. They got one. The DA threw it out because they did not get them both. Hood County, TX. I vote for the Dem opponent of that DA every time I get the chance and that hurts. Mostly I am thinking the DA must be linked to the AB. The thiefs were.

Its got me to the point I don't even buy diddly off of eBay or Craigslist.

I did get my stuff back that was pawned at that shop. Never found other things.

Boogie I bet 90% of the gun's stolen here the Local law doesn't even put the serial number's in the system.
Then our alcoholic DA isn't going to prosecute anything and the thug's know it.

A big share of the reason they don;t put the serial numbers in is because the owners have no idea what the serial number is. Back in the gunshop days only 1 in 10 knew the serial numbers and only abut half knew the make or model.

I believe that.

We have people come in to our church all the time seeking assistance. Some are legit and they are usually helped, sometimes with a bit of cash but most oftne with groceries, clothes or even mechanic work on their broken down cars (we have several garage owners in our congergation). Most are obvious drug addicts looking for cash to get a fix. They get mad when food or other assistance is offered. We had one make a big scene last summer and got very loud and beligerant about not getting cash. The deacons walked him out of the building to the parking lot where he threatened to perform bodily violence on one of the deacons. This deacon carries and the sight of his 9mm appearing out of his inside the waistband holster really cooled the troublemaker down. They held him until the county mounties arrived and took him away.

I usually don't carry in church (although I do during the Bonarroo festival) because a couple of deacons and an unknown number of parishoners do carry but I always have one handy out in the car.

After reading that article, I would think that the man will probably get charged if the girl dies. Yes, it was an accident, but it was also a very careless act on his part. A few months ago, I had a really good friend of mine that I went to school with, got killed by some young men who were doing some target practice. Accident? Yes... They failed to completely check behind their target, and a stray bullet struck my friend and killed him as he was working on a tractor.
The DA filed first degree manslaughter charges against the two men involved.
Now as far as I am concerned, I agree with CB and others who say its ok to take a gun into a church. We have designated men who walk around out around the church building and parking lot because we have had cars stolen, vandalism to the building AND cars, while church was in session.

Depends on where the money goes. We have over 1200 famlies in our church, 9 service per week, plus all the other things that have to be done....Total staff...3......2 priests and a secretary....priest makes $1,400 a month. All funds he receives for any service other than the worship services (weddings, funerals etc) he gives back to the church.
