Chickens???

Chickens are easy to raise I don't have any nowdays but when I did I would just turn em out in the mornings let em eat bugs and weeds or whatever else they felt like feasting on. They will go to the chickenhouse at sundown. Then just go shut em in and keep the predators out. I never fed em except when the were too little to turn out. Always had em all et up by fall.
And no they won't hang around the barn.

Cypress, IF they stay in and around the barn, it'll be a miracle. Just be ready for them roosting and making a heck of a mess, if you dont build a pen for them. Most of em' we had were picked off by Owls, or Foxes and Coyotes. Aint nothing like going to get on a Tractor and find chicken little was there the night before.

Man, I posted just before I left work and came home and in a couple of hours this.....whew. thanks to everyone for the replies, but crowder's above post alone is enough to say no. Gale and Milkmaid's comments are enough for me to tell my wife, and then she will make sure we don't get chickens. No one messes with her flower beds. This is a woman who likes to sit in the front yard and admire the house, thinking of what she could do next.

My girls are just old enough to start getting into 4-H, they seem to ask about a different animal once every few weeks. I'll have to nip this one in the bud. Maybe I'll give in to the llama request instead. Already said no to goats and rabbits and ducks.

Edit: Is there any type of fowl that would stay around a barn, or am I asking too much?
cypress,
Seriously.....if your girls are getting into 4H they have a program where the girls can raise 4H chickens and would be a worthwhile deal....but you need a pen. ;-) :cboy:

Around here, the Rat Terriers take priority over the chickens, and being the scrappy hunting dogs they are, taking a chicken now and then wasn't too bad. I went to the barn one day to feed and found my main momma dog and her 5 week old pups escaped from their kennel, faces red with blood, eating a free ranging game rooster for supper. Chickens finally became extinct due to over hunting by the rat dogs, which wasn't altogether bad 'cause the tractor seat DOES stay a lot cleaner![/b]

when i was little my grandma bought me some chicks for easter. i think there were 3. meanest danm birds i ever in my life saw. i raised those chickens and they were meaner'n hell to me! i was only about 4 or 5. I couldnt even play in the yard without them attacking me. had to get our maid/nanny at the time, Ida, to come outside with me and beat the chickens off with a broom while i did whatever. neighbors dog got the black one and the other two "accidentally" were poisoned by some chemical overflow that dad was farming with.

So that explains it Beefy. You were bullied by chickens as a child ;-) Guess you don't like Hitchcock's "The Birds"
Beefy, you got the virus or something? That's the second time this week I've seen you say that something made you want to vomit.

i like "The Birds." i forgot the other thing that made me want to vomit. refresh me.

Get em a nice little heifer for 4-H. Then you get a nice cow. Win, Win situation.

We always kept about 150 or so Golden Comets when i was younger.
We had some Plymouth Rocks too but they didn't seem to lay as many eggs as the Comets.

We had a chicken coop (about 10x15 in size) with about 50 nesting boxes for the hens and we would caponize all the males and eat/sell them once they grew up.

Used a 40" chicken wire fence and clipped one of their wings so if they tried to fly they just ended up dive bombing in a spiral  .

We kept dogs around and taught them not to monkey with the chickens...dogs did good keeping predators away.

I know this can obviously be done....but tell me...how do you break the dogs from killing the chickens? :?: :cboy:

22 Long Rifle and get a new dog.

How many 22 bullets do you go through in an average week? :D

They asked about that one already aplus. I told them they could start on one of the newborn heifers I have, and show in commercial class.
I have the perfect candidate for showing for them, however, in one of my pastures. I have an arabian filly that has already been to 3 months of show school, and would be perfect candidate for them, and they are comfortable around her.
I think they are just more interested in animals in general because they are starting to be exposed to 4-H in school.

I will bring my crew of topless french maids. Thought that might be a lucrative business idea to offer to men to clean their house, but wife would never let me do the interviews to get them hired :(
