I have been to a lot of higher dollar purebred sales this year. The monkey business sure seems more rampant than at the local auction barns. do you guys have any horror stories of sale corruption. some of you might want to respond as guest to protect the guilty.HA HA

Yeah I've got a couple however not good to blurt it out for all to know. Sorry I can't share.

What's the point? can either of you give an example or anything besides "ya but I'm not going to tell you"

Sorry if I seem guff, but I don't understand the point of posting somthing like this without giving examples of "monkey business".

I agree Alan....I've always felt that the more scams are exposed, the less likely the chance of them working. I had never heard of the cashiers check scam until I read about it on here.
Please elaborate!

At the registered sales I have been to this year, nobody seems to go by the order of lot number posted in the catalog & it really irritates me. They seem to be trying to keep the buyers all off balance--having to flip back and forth through the info to find the lot # that some invisible buyer has already sent the bidding price of through the roof.

My other recent complaint is the way they are bringing in a really great cow and her weaning age heifer together and then sell as "choice" I feel like it is a bit of misrepresentation to squeeze their buyers.

Come on, though, what "scams" were you referring to, and how do I sign in as a guest?

Alan and eric,

Sorry you can't get anything "good stuff" out of this. But somethings are best not said on a public forum as what I stating to plb. That you took as if it was just a smart comment. If your going to get anything out of my posts in this thread is to read between the lines - Things in this forum do not stay with in this forum, search engines pick up posts, ect and when you deal with cattle big shots things are best unsaid if there is anything that may be serious down the line. - that's what personal ranch meetings are for, not forums.

If others can share a general happening where they may or may not have been involved so be it.

I have never been to a purebred sale where the sale order was the same as the catalog order. Usually it is much more cohesive to catalog by type I. E. bred heifers , calves, bulls, pairs....etc.
Never been a problem to me or anyone I have ever met. I also happen to think that selling cow or calf choice adds entertainment value to the sale. If these are the things that bothers you about a purebred sale I am suprised.
I always thought everyone was aware of the slight of hand and were upset by that.

Ollie, maybe they are talking about all them there "big breeders". You know, the you scratch my back I'll scratch yours kinda thing. There probably is a sale or two where no money actually changes hands on them top selling lots. But it sure does make that sale average look impessive. ;-)

Sorry, but I gotta throw in with eric and allen on this one. Nothing personal cattle_gal, but if all anyone can do is hint around about some crooked dealings which are out there that we might fall victim to, it's better, imho, to just not even bring it up,especially if there are reprocussions to be feared. Just my penny's worth.

I guess after thinking about it my advice to cure the problem is don't do business with people you think are unethical.

I put in the statment to logout of your acct and then post as a guest. ou won't be connected to your post. I am simply looking at different ways sales pad numbers and how to avoid paying to much.

If there were no replies would you all also think- humm must not be much funny business going on. Just in plb's own little mind. So what's the acknowledgement to him, yes, that it has happened to someone else on this board besides him or what he saw. But no won't talk about it. Not everyone needs every last bit of info as if it is the last news in the world. Take a mole hill and make a moutain out of one sentence. Wow. I guess my Politically Correct phrasing BS just isn't up to snuff on how to properly answer ones post.

cattle gal,

I think the subject is a good subject a warrants discussion, someone can talk about the "monkey business" in general terms, without naming names or places.

I'm not looking for gossip on any sale operations, just what could/may/has happened at sales. Some have already posted good points and counter points, without harming anyone.

That's great that some others have stepped up and shared. Everyone may have different thoughts as to what is considered funny business is too.

But why not post to a new thread that was made yesterday that didn't even have a reply on it. If there would have been someone posting to the thread would I have post. Heck no. But what a shame to have no replies on a thread. So why not let a guy have some kind of reply. And now look he's got all sorts of replies maybe not what he was looking for and prehaps some others will look on here and post.

Quite right cattle_gal. I wasn't thinking of it from that prospective. Thanks for the reminder.

I still think it's a cop out to not expose some of these tactics to help some of us who don't deal with cattle for a living and will probably never ever go to a "ranch meeting."

We had a similiar thread to this in another horse forum, and folks were very forthcoming with their stories and warnings/tips to be aware of.
One of the main things I remember about buying a horse is to try and show up anounced to check out the animal, as it seems some guys will drug a horse to make it appear friendlier / calmer than it naturally is. If you always call before going out there, it gives the seller time to do whatever he needs to do to the animal.

As far as the cashiers check scam, it's been passed around here for quite awhile, but for some of the newcomers to the forum, here it goes....

A buyer offers you your requested price for your cows, sometimes even a little bit more for your trouble. He says he only has a cashiers check from his bank in a certain amount, usually several thousand dollars over your selling price. He says he'll send you the entire check, and you can take out the selling price plus any shipping charges you think will apply, and then send him the remainder or give the remainder to his driver when he picks up your cattle. This is usually pulled on late Friday or Sat, since the banks will be closed. So now he has your cattle, your money back from the cashiers check, and he is long gone. When you go to the bank Monday morning, you find out the check was a fake and you just lost everything. I know this sounds farfetched to most people, but people get ripped off everyday with far sillier schemes. We hear on the news every few weeks where some older guy fell for the lottery scam. Same thing, fake ticket, they will be deported if they turn it in, they sell it to the old guy for 1/2 its value. Guy goes to collect money from lottery office, finds out it's a fake ticket.

So, there they were...in the "secret alley" spray cans in hand. Somewhere in the distance, someone played some Waylan to cover the sounds of the "swishhhh...swishhhhh....swishing" of the black paint being carefully applied to the Charlais heifers. Big beauties, they were, but not the right color for this sale.

:?: :?: :?:

Or.....

The wayward cattleman laughed all the way to the bank. Could they really have been so easily deceived? Sure, there were no testicles there--they had been castrated, but those city slickers didn't notice the "sheath girdles" used to pass the bunch off as "bred heifers". Rich! Rich! Rich! :cowboy:

Maybe nobody wants to share their embarassment at being taken by sheath girdles. I think you could at least give us some "a neighbor of mine went to a sale &..." Or "I heard at the co-op that some poor fool..."

Otherwise, why post a whole lot of nothing just to hear ourselves type--or maybe some are trying to acheive "GURU" status???

I've noticed that two or three big breeders will tend to do a lot of business with each other, and purchase the "top-selling" bull from each other nearly every year, but I don't guess that's illegal.
