ran into my neice an her old man in town yesterday.so we decided to go to the sale an watch some stock cows an pairs sale.them old boys have spring fever early.weigh cows are bringing .50 to.90 a lb.talked to guy thats in the know,an he said as the sale was going on 1 week,that they got a call to raise the weigh bull price .05 a lb.an they are bringing .80 to $1.05.breeding bulls are selling for $1300 to $1700 nothing special.pairs are bringing from $1000 to $1300.open heifers ave weight 725 brought $1.45 a lb for $1050.they sold a set of tiger open heifers for $1100.

That's a good trend. Especially great to see packers continue on the upward trend.

The only thing that concerns me is going to be the retail prices. What's that going to do to the industry in the short term and long haul?

Trends are just that.. trends. Industry prices go up..and down.. just a good time for the producer right now. How long it lasts??? time will tell..

with us being severly short of cattle i dont think the prices will back off anytime soon.because as beef prices go up people buy more hamberger meat.but its not just the meat that has gone up.everything we eat has gone up by 30% or more.plus you have to figure in the people that sell out never to buy cattle again.

You are right, bigbull. I know of at least 3 or 4 cattlemen who got out of the business due to the drought last year, and sold all their equipment too. They were just in it a long time, and just figured the time was right.

ok ill give you another example,the guy i was with had enough hay to feed his herd through the drought.but he decided to sell his herd in oct.then he started selling his hay an sold all of it.while we was headed to the house he said man i shouldnt have sold all my cows.an i told him that i told him that before he did it last year.he goes yeah i shouldve just culled the prob an old cows an kept my herd.he sees that when he buys back itll cost him $1000 to $1200 a hd.

thats a good example.. AND.. if this drought continues.. I know i will be looking seriously at doing some heavy culling (already been doing some of it) I wouldnt go out of the business ALL the way, but ...dang we sure need some rain...

didnt you get any rain when we was getting those 3 to 6 inch rains the last 2 or 3wks.i hope im wrong but it really looks like the drought is gonna control the cattle #s.if i was you will weigh prices so high id cull now.

We got only 1" here during that time.. ponds are still way down, Gonna take some gulley washers to fill em up. But at least I have a deep well, that continues to do good for me.
Yep, the drought will control the #'s thats for sure.

Took some steers to the sale today and av. $2.03 per pound. I was very happy, and I still have a few more to take.
Think I'll take the family out for steak, look out supper club. :banana:

A friend of ours hauled a couple of heifer calves on Sat. small one, 275lb brought $1.68 the bigger one 385lb brought $1.85 and a mix breed goat brought him $125.00.

heres something else about the 3 weights.you have them grazing wheat an they will gain weight.an they should come off the wheat weighing 600 to 650lbs.then you need to put another 200lbs on them before you sale them.so when you sale at 800 or 850lbs,how much did you make by buying them real light.
