My calf weigh tape hasn't come in yet. I had a calf born yesterday and at the very top of the hoof along the hairline, it measured 6 3/4." Can someone tell me what weight this calf would be on a hoof measure tape? Thanks, Chuckie.

If my math is correct, that is 17 centimeters....which gives you a 71# bull calf, or a 72# heifer calf.

I've heard of this method of "weighing" with a tape and am curious to know how accurate you guys think this method is?

we've used this method for quite some time now. originally, we used a scale we carried in the field. when we first starting using the weight tape (this is the one that goes right above the hoof line), we would weigh it both ways (tape & scale) & found the tape to be pretty accurate (+/- 2 lbs). if you decide to go w/the tape, i'd suggest using a scale at first, too, to get a feel of where exactly to position it & how snug to pull it.

Chuckie, then, I meant to tell you congrats on your new #72 heifer calf. That is the tape I used last year on our commercials, (Angus x hereford) and found it to be with in #2. So you should be fairly close.
