Calf was born Wednesday morning. I knew it would be a bottle calf because momma didn’t milk her last calf. Momma is going on a trailer soon. Got colostrum in her the morning she was born and she is on a soy based milk right now but have some milk based formula I’m going to transition her on. Poop has been normal till today. She takes 2-2 1/2 quarts twice daily. Plenty of energy not acting weird. Thought on her poop this afternoon?C869565C-B8F2-4C54-9310-FD72FC62CA2B.jpeg

Bloody scours? https://www.calfdistinction.com/blogs/news/bloody-scours-what-do-they-mean

Does the calf have a fever? Hopefully your calf is not going down this road. Please get some milk based milk replacer and do not change over to it suddenly, mix them less and less soy for a couple of days. The temp of water to mix is supposed to be 110F.

My Jersey bottle calf had bad scours but it was not bloody. But she became weak and lost her suck reflex. The vet said to go right now to the feed store get some ReSorb. You will need 6 packets. It is a powder you mix with rwo quarts of 110 degree water and they drink from a bottle. You are not supposed to give this with the milk replacer but wait 6 hours between milk feedings. Two feedings of milk and 2 of resorb a day for 2 days. Then 1 packet of Resorb feeding once a day for the next 2 days. The elctrolytes and glucose in Resorb restored my calve's will to live. She did not have bloody scours. That needs a vet. Often times is is coccidiosis. There are milk replacers that have coccidiostats. Get that one.

Soy based milk replacer is the worse ! Should be a scour med you could give it and possibly electrolytes.

Thanks. Haven’t got a temp yet. She seems fine and energetic. Going to slowly start her on the new milk and add some electrolytes to it with an extra electrolyte feeding. Local feed store only had soy based and was in a tight. Don’t have any scour meds on had so may have to wait till Monday unless y’all think she needs something sooner.

Is there a Tractor Supply store nearby ? Not sure if you have those where you live . They are open on Sundays

Get switched over to the good milk replacer and monitor for a day or two. Let us know how her poop looks again tmrw. I'm betting she clears right up!

Too young for coccidiosis already.

Good on you for catching her early and getting the colostrum in her. Don't over react just yet tho. Is she in with any animals that could've stepped on her?

And fer Pete's sake! Post a pic or two!

Closest TCS is 45 min away but will make the drive after church tomorrow. This is what I’m swapping the milk to. View attachment 22744
That's what I've been using since I can't seem to get Ultra 24 any more.

I wouldn't "transition"
I'd JUST STOP with the soy based crap!

And I posted above as well

She is in a 2 acre lot with the non milk producing mom and another cow that’s close to calving. Plenty of room but you never know.

The electrolytes and resorb sure won't hurt, but I'd still monitor for a day or two before I went all gonzo. The electrolytes etc always throws off feeding schedules. If she's got fresh water available and she's active, see my first sentence...

I was sick to my stomach last year when one got stepped on at the feed bunk. Talk about an AWFUL feeling

Just changed out the water from a 100 gal tank to a 40 gal short tank this afternoon. Hopefully the call will utilize the new water tank.

Bag is good looking but not a drop of milk from it. Watched the calf try for 20 min the get milk from it and never could find a tit to work.

Cow is pretty laid back and I felt the bag earlier and it’s pretty hard feeling. I will try and milk her and see what happens. Doubt I will do any better than the calf.
Yeah shoot, ya just never know. I've had some milk a bit after clearing a bunch of Chrystal stuff out. One never would keep clear. Every time I got her going, she would plug back up again.
Needless to say, that one's gone like yesterday.

Interesting deal.

Hope to hear a good update on that baby tomorrow!

O! And stay back if she coughs and farts in sync! Jeans will thank you for it...
🤣

Edited to add...
The sustain lll calf bolus' are some kinda magical for scours if she continues!
Most others I've tried are just poor attempts
