Sometimes some crossbreds resembles like a purebred. I have five full belted cows in my herd, yet they are 7/8 Angus.

The white legs and most of the white markings of hereford character are recessive traits, and the dominant white head is usually the only marking that shows up in a baldie, where the white usually is much smaller than on the hereford head.
The belt is a dominant trait, it stays on some of the calves whatever you breed to.
It was first introduced into the galloway breed with only four individuals from a ship. That is now five hundred years ago...

I have mostly blk angus cross,a few blk baldies,two red cross cows and last october I bought 13 head reg blk angus.I kept three heifers from last year two blk baldies and a angus heifer out of a angus bull that I used to have.I'm looking at keeping four heifers out of this springs calves if they continue growing out good.One is that red baldie heifer sucking on that red cow in the picture.

Brian I apologize if you thought I was calling you a liar. That was not my intention. But something is not right for a bull to come out looking like that from an angus cow and a herf bull. He just looks too much herf to me. I really beliebe that somewhere back a ways something got switched up. I can't explain it but it just doesn't look or smell right.

FOR THE RECORD...that is one dam fine bull. I wish all mine came out that nice.

Brian, I'm sorry if I started something. I was just courious if you knew for sure that it was a reg black angus. Vic is right, something is just not quite right it seems. The bull should be black, and it's one he77 of a looking bull to have anything angus in it. Sorry if I offended you in any way, wait till I post pics of my cattle, now that's some animals to poke fun at. All black and all welfare cattle subsidyed by a plumbing account. Greg

Yes the belt is a dominant trait but this year we have no belted calves born despite of have 6 beltie cross cows and last year we only have one half belted calf. They were bred to a black angus bull.

I never knew that white legs and other markings were recessive but I have see them lots on black baldies. But then again these black baldies were not F1 crossbreds. I think you are right, the dam must be not "purebred" black angus.
