How soon can you breed your cow after she has her calf and is it different from a heifer?

You CAN breed a cow/heifer the first time they cycle after calving...that can vary from roughly 3-4 weeks to quite a bit longer, depending on the condition of the cow/heifer when she calved, and the nutrition she's getting after calving. Note I said CAN...most often cows are exposed to a bull from 45-90 days after calving. To get another calf within 12 months you need to have the cow rebred within 90 days of calving.

The AI class I took suggested that you want to wait AT LEAST 45 days post calving. I do know that we have had cows breed at less than that, but if they have problems calving, don't clean right away.... it can take them longer to start to cycle. In general, you want a cow to calve in 1 year intervals, which gives them 3 months (90 days) to rebreed.
