Im hoping to purchase 1-2 stud angus cows from a near by stud sale. Im just wondering what you would look for when selecting cows/heifers to breed bulls from for commercial operations (selling steers at 1yr old). Like if you focus on 200-400-600 day weight or EMA data for example.

If you have any other information that is relevant I would really like to know about it.

Before you can even think of selling bulls you need to have cows that can perform in a typical commercial set-up with the same type of inputs and management style found in your potential bull customers' operations. Once you have this base, you can address specific needs your bull customers have by AI-ing to sires strong in those traits.

No, he wants to breed bulls that will be used to make steers.

I agree with Knersie. You should focus on purchasing those cows from studs that are run in similar conditions to your commercial cows', then determine if your audience is selling calves as weanlings, yearlings, or retaining ownership, if they retain their own replacements, and how important calving ease is to them. If you are doing this for your own commercial herd it is simpler, but if you are selling it gets harder as everyone has different goals.
