Why is it a necessary for you to make a post?

I don't mind js1234 posting Not a fan. Everbody has the right to voice their opinion. BUT If your going to post that you have to atleast explain why. We or atleast i am on this forum to learn new thing. Some of the best advice I have been given was not what I wanted to hear.

So js1234 I would love to hear why you don't like them!!!!!!
Maybe we all can learn something.

Nothing against you Muddy i agree it wasn't necessary without an explanation.

Glad you cleared that up so Muddy isn't mad at you too, LOL.
Now about the Braunvieh;
My experience with them is certainly limited compared to many other breeds, however, I have owned three sets of either straight or half Braunvieh feeder cattle totaling about 1,200 head.
We purchased 300 half Braunvieh heifers weighing 9 that seemed cheap. Based on their conversion, it would have been a better use of funds to buy 6 loads of donkeys and the donkeys may have done better on the grid.
The next year, for a mysterious reason, we decided we needed more abuse and purchased 750 Braunvieh cross steers weighing 6 and 150 straight Braunvieh steers weighing the same from two separate ranches. Those cattle we ran on grass, and shipped them to a feed yard to finish at 8. It should be noted, they should have weighed 875 as every other set of cattle on that same ranch of ours outperformed them that season by 50-100lbs. They continued to disappoint in their feedyard performance. I'd have to look back but I'd hazard a guess that those Braunvieh sets lost over $100,000 and fully $80,000 was a product of their inferior performance on which market factors have no bearing. Infact, that set of steers, based on our performance models we use to track stocker/feeder cattle through our entire program, which does not factor in the market as red or black ink can obscure one's opinion on a set of cattle, were our single poorest performing set of cattle that season out of over 25,000 head of cattle.
In summation, despite the fact that they may "look cool", I'm not a fan.

My dad fed a half a pot load of Braunviehs one time and said it took them forever to finish. Said he would never own another one. I've only ever bought one probably 5 years ago and I still hear about it. Most of the calves I see that are noticeably braunvieh get a 20+ cent dock.

Very well stated.

Thanks js1234 and Ojp6

I have limited experience with the full blood braunvieh. The crosses I have and have talked to other commercial operations about have grown like weeds and graded well. Any breed or cross that is not main stream better be 10% heavier and grad better. It's just a fact anything different is going to have a spot light on them. I have a lot experience with the half blood cows and love them. They are the best momma's that I have had. They have amazing udders, milk well, breed back and live a long productive life.

Breeds of cattle can be like the Ford,Chevy and Dodge thing. Most people have blinders on when defending what they like. With anything there is going to be the good, bad, ugly, lemons and dinks.

Angus is in most everything we sell. But I would bet that there are alot of disappointing pure Angus pens as well. Your not going to hear about that from the Angus guru's.

Could that be because even a poor Angus is still pretty darn good?
Or maybe because they're black? Seen lot of disappoints from Angus more than other breeds.

Yup!!! We gave Black Angus too much credits for their black hide market. There's tons of junky Angus cattle here.

That's probably what it is!!!!!!! Even the poorest pure Angus is better than the best of any other breed. :) But I will have to say no other breed has come close to promoting there product like Angus.

This is going to get like talking about what religion, political party, truck or tractor is the best. :deadhorse: I don't want that at all. Every breed has good and bad but some more than others. I just like to hear other people's opinions and experiences. What you do with someones opinion is up to the person reading the post.

I would also like to say I don't think the cattle industry would be where it is today without Angus. But you are definitely leaving money on the table not crossing angus.

im new here but ill give this much and its only my lowly opinion from what ive seen in the 80s they said they wanted angus so the sale barns sales started reflecting that ,jump back to 70s a well respected man said angus was one of the finest breeds of cattle there was (my father ) he also belived in heteros from crossing thus my experience with angus x semi, problem came when you had someone with some nasty looking mixed batch (no breeds metioned)all shape an sizes so when they could not get decent price at a sale barn and watch any thing black fetch top dollar .yea! they bought or borrowed any black bull they could get there hands on ! just to get top price out baldy looking calves or cow .now this could be still in my opinion what is happening today i call it the angus train wreck. there are still some fine looking angus herds out there ! went out looking last few years helping friend put togther pot load for his brother to fatten ,trust me most of if not all the cattle are black but my god i thought the nastys had been cleaned out by now , but they havent some one some where still wants to make quick buck more so than selling good cattle.the info that ojp an js1234 gave was intresting as from most what ive heard so far braunvieh are awsome mama cows and feed conversion is good they increase over all grade an yied for the better so some experience good and bad is very informative there are some breeds that should be chosen for moma cows and some that should be chosen for the feedlot thus three way cross comes into play ,well thats long winded enough ! ill leave you with this think i read it on another board several years ago !
some one said ( the cattle i have and sell make me money but they are not and do not have to be the breed i like personally as long as they make me money an keep me in this business i love )

Waaaaaay too many Angus bulls are sold every year that should have had their nuts cut off and been fed. This happens in many many purebred settings no matter what breed it is but the dominance of Angus has supercharged it in the breed. I go to a lot of bull sales and I am 100% convinced that while the front end type Angus bulls will stack up against or possibly out perform about anything, the middle to bottom cut of Angus bulls at many of the Angus bull sales has declined in recent years in my view.
That's not to say I'm not an Angus fan, our bull battery is about 2/3's Angus and the majority of cattle I buy are Angus sired or very strongly influenced.

I agree completely with both statements.
