Black Herefords

Anyone using black baldie bulls? If so what’s your weaning weight with just grass and momma? I’m curious about these and today’s polled Herefords. The ones we had when I was a kid didn’t produce much milk. In our area black and baldie bring the best price. I’m wondering what a black baldie bull would do on my herd of every color

Seems to be several of them around lately. From what I see advertised if I were looking for one I would make sure he was homozygous black. Most of what I have seen are from black bulls and mostly red cows that would be little to no advantage over a good red bull.
We are keeping a BWF bull calf this year to be our version of a “black Hereford” he is actually 3/4 Angus and 1/4 Hereford. From an Angus bull and an F1 BWF cow.

It is baldy cows that have the benefits ?

Unless used with another breed different to the baldy makeup ?

I agree, an Angus bull on Hereford cows or vise versa is the best use of genetics, and that the resulting females are the most beneficial for breeding stock. I think that has been a lot of the criticism of the black Hereford concept. I have always been an advocate for cross breeding using purebred bulls and still am. My plan with our crossbred bull is to use him on a few select cows to maybe get some replacement heifers from. He combines a bull that worked well and a line of cows that have put a several replacements in our herd. I am not sure of how it will go, but am hoping the disposition of calves will be more like the Hereford given that the bull has a percentage in him. That’s just a personal preference as it seems for the most part they are a little easier to work with. I wouldn’t recommend for myself or anyone else to use crossbred bulls without knowing something about their backgrounds and then it’s still debatable how it turns out.
