We're fairly new to cattle, but this is the first<br>time a cow hasn't gotten up to nurse her calf<br>after giving birth. It's just about midnight on<br>August 27; she gave birth about 3 hours ago. The<br>calf seems fine, but the cow lays there, occasionally<br>raising her head. Any words of wisdom?

If it was a real hard birth with a big calf what comes to mind is that she pinched a nerve in her hind end. If she did she probably can't get up. Try to get her up and if she's real wobbly then that's probably the case. Stip some colustrum out of her and try to get it into the calf within the next 2 or 3 hrs. It needs it for the antibodies and will absorb it best in the first 6 to 12 hrs. The sooner the better.If she's pinched the nerve she will heal but it may take a bit, just try to get her up(preferably not on something slippery like concrete). Now the other thing that comes to mind.... is she still pushing alot? If she is she may prolapse her uterus. In that case get a vet out pronto...See how that goes for now and let us know how you make out....<br>Janet
