Those 10 would be worth what 4 or 5 good calves are worth.

At the sale yesterday there were two longhorn pairs that came through with calves that appeared to be from a Charo bull. One sold for $1600, the second for 1750 I think. Calves were about 275 lbs. They were pretty good buys. I think one was bought by Texas PawPaw an occasional poster here.

B's brother had about a thousand longhorn cows. Bred them to a Char bull. Worked fine for while but the feedlots stopped buying his calves or when they did it was at a discount. That and some other issues bankrupted him. Still has cows but not so many longhorns.

A few years ago B bought some roped out Corriente heifers. Got them real cheap. Used them for ET Wagyu. Must not have worked out as I haven't seen those Corriente around.

The buyers here look a lot closer to calves than just the color. I have watched black Corriente crosses sell for about half what good beef calves bring.

Young guy that works for me also buys at Hermiston for me. 4 heiferrettes came in. Vet pregged them as open and he bought the group for $2450. Works for one of our carcass customers.

Coleman was pretty adamant one was bred and offered to trade out his next check for her. Math worked so I said yes.

Next day, Tam sends this picture of Coleman’s heifer. I told him if he’d waited one day on the trade it would have been three weeks wages instead of 2 ;-}

This morning I looked at Superior's country page. Lots of bred heifers asking $4,000-$4,200. Mostly located east of the Rockies and south. But no bids showing. Only 3 lots showing sold last week. 2 of those 3 sold for less than $4,000. I noticed the order buyers who were buying the $4,000 - $3,500 cows last week were sitting on their hands this week. The one exception is a man i know who has an order for 1,600 bred cows. But he hasn't been paying $3,000. Mostly he will stop if the hit $2,800.

I was saying something to B about others paying $3,100-$3,200 for broken mouth cows. He said, well if we end up losing money they are going to lose a lot more.

Here is most of this year's cows on the feed row. I started feeding Friday. Only about half rations but they are slicking it up so I guess I will have to start feeding more. I went out there on the quad to check some things and take their picture. about a dozen heard me coming and headed for the high country. They are going to have to get use to me checking on them. Note the one on the far right is a bull. Don't know where he came from or who he belongs to. Good looking young bull but the cows are all bred so he can just go home and eat his own hay.

I had three or four like that cow in the back; I'm not a big fan of those linebacks, but I can't complain I got them cheap. They more than paid for themselves. I am now down to one, and I'm going to eat her heifer calf. I need a beef and I would get discounted big time for the lineback calf, so I might as well eat her.

We like to have numbers of 20 so the feeding come out. So I either need 12 to make 80 or 32 to make 100. I plan to stop at 12 more unless B shows with more old cows and we have to even the numbers up.

You've done alright then gathering the numbers in a difficult market to buy these cows from.
