There was a big bred cows sale. Started with complete dispersal of 550+ cows. They had over 1,300 cows. The first ones in the ring was 10 head of black 3-5 year olds bred 5 months weighing 1,184. They announced that there was 66 in this sort. You could take as few as 5 head gate cut or any number up to the 66 head. They sold for $4,000. He took all 66 of them. Next was 67 head of 6-7 year olds. Same guy paid $3,975 and he took 49 head. My math that worked out to an over sized cattle pot load. The other 18 head in this sort sold for $3,800. Next was 44 head of 8-9 year olds. Same cattle. They sold for $3,450. The winning bidder took them all. And 48 head of broken mouth cows which were just the oldest group of the same cattle sold for $3,150.
And so on it went. Large sorts of similar cows and you could take 5 gate cut or how ever many you need or want. At the end they were selling single which were the odd one that did fit into the cuts or small bunches bought in by other cosigners. Started selling at noon and finished up at a little before 7:00.

Here is yesterday's two. Both younger cows. That paint slash on the close ones shoulder means she is solid mouth. The slash with dot above means she is a 4 year old. At $2,100 each I would take another 30 just like them for the same money.

Also B and crew pushed cow down out of the canyon yesterday. Found 2 more of my cows. One had an outstanding 700 pound calf. I will preg check them and possibly run them one more time.

Got 15 this week. 14 of them at a bred cow special today. It was mostly older cows there. They averaged weighing 1,230 and were either 5 or 6 months bred. They are all broken mouth except one solid mouth. They cost me a touch over my desired average but going into today I was way below that number. So I am still about $90 below my desired number.

Older 5 month bred cows were 2500 and up today. I just watched and sat on my hands.

They started out $2,500 to $2,800 for anything. I don't remember any bringing $3,000. And that was bred heifers to smooth mouth cow. I got to start a few but just a bid or two and they would go too high for me. But as the sale went on the prices dropped some. The had some where between 350 and 400 bred cows. I think people were cleaning out older cows as that was mostly what they sold.

Speaking of people cleaning out their old cows. B had gathered hundreds of pairs lately. Calves were all weaned. This week the cows were sorted. Half to winter pasture down along the Snake River. The other half to local lower elevation range. And some deemed too old for either of those sorts came to me to join the one and done crew. He told me about 15 cows. They arrived yesterday. We need to work on B's counting. There is 25 of them. Mostly an assortment various breed older beef cows. But on the last load there was one black and white spotted obvious longhorn cross. Wait one minute. In a couple weeks these cows will be out in the field by the road. Everyone driving past will be able to see this cow in my field. I do have standards. They may be low standards but not this low...........

I used to have a neighbor that said he threw in an odd color every hundred head to make them easier to count!

We have enough odd colors out there. There is 4 Charolais, several straight Herefords and an assortment of red Angus cows.

There is now 22 new one in the corral. We need to have a branding party so we can turn them out. They didn't want to pose for a group picture. This was the best I could do. It was getting late and my fingers were getting cold.PB140217.JPGPB140218.JPG

Longhorns are noted for their longevity. You may get another TEN one and done calves out of her...
