Winters getting long. Hay and pasture's running out.

Bunch of good cow's went through open today guy selling out his bull went bad.
I would have bid on a bunch of this guy's had they been bred. Dang near everyone went to slaughter.
The Herf today was a little lighter bred than I usually buy she has potential of replacing one of the old gal's.

Bought some bull calves to make steers out of today. These were 1 1/2 upgradable calves with medium to thin flesh with up to 1/4 to 3/8 Brahman influence. The 4 wt calves averaged 440 lbs @ $162.20, the 5 wt calves averaged 538 lbs @ $158.41

CB How many preg. checked cows go through your Saturday sale on a normal day? That sure sounds cheap enough for that herf cow, what would she weigh? Does 3 x4 mean 3 yr old ,4months bred? I'm getting through winter with lots of hay left over; I'm itching to pick up a few pairs or bred cows if I can find them at a decent price and close by.

What's a 1 1/2 upgradable calf? Must be a texas term. gs
A calf that has potential to upgrade to a #1 feeder calf. These are usually bull calves that have been undernourished. Down here nearly all the calves will have a little ear (Brahman influence). 1/8 and 1/4 blood calves sell right there with straightbred English calves.

She weighed 840.

Hook 95% of the time I would say you were dead on with your assessment.
There is plenty of hay in this part of the world and we have had a mild winter cept for a couple of bad cold snap's.
Now this is IMO that most have no desire to grow the herd any longer so the back to the farm market has gone down.
Seems like everyone is happy to stay at reduced herd numbers. The heifers coming though is like they were retained with a group and got cut or it is SS that got replaced. Not a lot of middle aged cow's.
I know I went from the mid 30's to 12 full timer's and I might add or delete one from time to time.
When settin around drinking coffee with the guy's nearly everyone reduced their herds by 2/3 rd's and are staying right there.

Caustic, we are seeing that same thing about 200 miles north of you. A good many older producers sold out and decided to raise hay on their place. Problem is there are not enough animals to eat hay and the guys up in Arkansas and Missouri that sold us hay two years ago cannot come down here and buy hay because of fireants.

Good deal CB, wish i could find herefords for that.
What confuse's me is everyone of these guy's are running a black bull or a Hereford on black cow's.
They will fight over a sorry black cow and let a good Hereford go. As I have stated many time's I do not want a black cow there are no options with a black cow. Heck for the first time my life as I have never seen this before my Angus bull knocked the white off a a calf out of a registered Hereford cow. Got one little white sock. I have never seen one before that didn't end up at least brockle faced.

Better start raising you some "sorry black cows" CB and laugh all the way to the bank. I've seen it too.
