Bale Grazing

Help Support CattleToday:

Gravel and rock is a must UP here. First clutch job I did I had the tractor halves cribbed up just on the frozen clay and within a few days sun came out and it warmed up.... the cribbing sank 18+" as the frost bubbled out and the 2 halves fell over and caused all kinds of damage.

The cost to repair the cab, replace glass, replace exhaust manifold and turbo was way more than the fabric, pit run, and road gravel that I ended up putting on the pad cost.

Yall have talked me into it. Might be a crusher run gravel floor for a while. Still be a huge improvement.

On another note, I been clipping ragweed where I bale grazed last winter. Plus a pic of the next field in rotation. I'm about 2 week from grazing on it.

Get some concrete wash. It will pack down almost like full on concrete and is a lot smoother. A lot cheaper than any straight rock too. The local concrete yard has a mountain of it. A tandem load is less than $200.

I just checked last week 14 tons of number four crushed rock $850 a load. A damn building boom in this area has driven the price up on everything.

You have the perfect place to get whatever you want. Go down to the Zinc mine and get some uncrushed limestone. Or anything bigger than the lime they produce. Then top it with lime. I think its $5 a ton picked up. Plus its a mile from your house.
Lime or gravel, it's all real close to me. Think the last tri load of number 4's I got cost me $520 last fall.

Hadn't thought about using the lime that way. Pretty slick idea.

Some bale grazing time lapse pictures. I did unroll 10 or 12 bales on it this past winter as well. Plan to cut it for hay this year.
