Bad week to sell

If the price doesn't come down in the store demand will keep going down a long with prices. I sold fourteen last week and they brought right around half what they did last year. By late fall I agree with the dollar a pound people. A lot of people who bought the farm, cattle, machinery, etc. recently are in a world of poop.

Jl I sold a total of twenty in the last 3 weeks and mine were half and some even more than what they would have brought last year at this time. I definitely will not be holding calves over this winter expecting prices to be better next year.

I guess I have to see it different. Maybe for my own piece of mind. I bought a lot of equipment, land improvements , and cattle. I wouldn't have been able to buy them if not for the high we enjoyed. Certainly would have been better off if I had waited on some of the cattle. And not kept all those heifers. I could have done better for sure.
You know what though. Thanks to what I bought with those good checks. I 've got some equipment. I've got some improved pasture. And I've got a pretty good size bunch of mama's. Prices can go to a dollar. I ain't going like it. But I'll be ok.

It could take a couple more years for cattle prices to bottom... A huge issue is less export, and producers don't have much control over that.
I had a discussion with a grazing tech last week on how to reduce costs. Basic idea was more labor (to increase stocking density in a paddock) and less other inputs. That leave overhead to deal with.

With all the low cattle prices, when will the lower beef prices be seen in stores? My guess, we want. Cattle prices been dropping for a year. I'm not selling now and if they continue to drop, I'll buy more. I'm not giving my cattle away. This will eventually end and prices will go back up. Just hope I can survive.

I've never really done much grocery shopping, and couldn't tell ya what beef is in the case. It's a good guess, that it is priced as high, as the market will support. That's the problem with the producer being the caboose.

I have learned a valuable lesson.. SELL WHEN THEY ARE READY...For me that's between 475-500lbs longer you keep them further you will be in the hole... Prices may go back up... But how much? When? if you hold then you can still lose money. As far as beef in the stores be cheaper im guessing never because consumers have adjusted to the high prices the only person not getting a fair share is the American producers.

Absolutely my friend. If you are set up to produce and sell weaning calves, that's what you do. You don't beat your head against the wall trying to beat the market by a month here or there. Sell em when it's time and get to work on the next crop. It's really all you can do.

I agree.

Shipped 3 bull calves to sale on Tues 28th. Wasn't expecting much after reading reports, but was surprised when my check came in today.
6 mos - 590# - 1.26 - 743.40
5 mos - 560# - 1.26 - 705.60
5 mos - 560# - 1.27 - 711.20
Right off the Momma's. Not as good a last year but I've sold many for less.

I noticed prices keep coming on down. Looks like at least 10 cents the last couple weeks. IT was good while it lasted.

At this rate they will be .78 cents a lb by winter like it was years ago.
