Bigbull,
I'm sorry your back is so bad. I use to wake up in the middle of the nite with severe back pain. I would take a couple of prescription pain pills and move to the livingroom recliner, and slept well. Problem is I'd wake up with the darndest headache. I believe if you eould invest in an adjustable bed with the memory foam mattress you would sleep better, I know it has helped me. Problem is remedies are temporary. Pills make me sick and raises my blood pressure causing severe headaches. The Johnny Walker works better. By the way Bigbull, are you old enough to drink hard liquor?
ive been old enough to drink the hard stuff for almost 30yrs  the other day i unloaded 4 rabon blocks an i was sure moving easy because i didnt want to pull my back.ive thought of them adjustable beds, but cant seen to turn loose of the money.

Had a followup visit with the Dr. yesterday. Still having some problems but not as bad as at first. Saw his good looking assistant instead of him so that was a plus. She said to live with the pain, that it should get a little better with time. Told her I wanted to be able 18 again and to work 80 hours a week and she said to go fishing instead. She did not understand that 80 hours was slowing down.
Unloaded a 11.2.24 tractor tire with fluid today and put it on the tractor. I ain't dead yet.
Thanks to all for the advice.

Kenny, these Dr's that give all the healing advice usually don't have bad backs.

A couple of things I've discovered over the years of fighting this: if you're laying on your side when you're sleeping, grab one of those fifty pillows your wife keeps on the bed and stick it between your legs: apparently (according to a physical therapist I dealt with some years back) it keeps the weight of your "top" leg from pulling down the pelvis, which in turn twists your lower vertebrae in a direction you don't want it.. It's easier to sleep like that than you would think it is. Also, I discovered a couple of years back that if you ever get one of those times when your back gets tightened up and you just want somebody to pop it, that a 250 gal. propane tank helps a lot: especially if it's cold out. I just go and lay back on the thing and "wrap" my back around the curvature of the tank: I've had it pop from time to time, but it always helps at least a little bit even if it doesn't... I just call it my "yard chiropractor"..

Got up Wednesday morning to go to work and bent over to put on my sock and could not get back up. Major pain. Finally got my clothes on and had to use a cane to get to the truck. Went to the Dr. and they gave me a pain shot and a pretizone shot. Said I had to have someone drive me home because I might go to sleep driving. :bs: Got home and had to take 2 more pain pills just to sit in the recliner. Got up Thursday and felt a little better, Friday was not too bad, used the tractor about 3 hours on Saturday and down again today. Getting to where if I take enough pills to stop the pain I can't think right and am nervous as heck. Anybody had any luck with physical therapy?

Sorry to hear of your pain. For me physical therapy did'nt help. I walk with a cane everywhere I go. I don't have an answer for you as every one is different. I'm just thankful that I made to retirement and have excellent Insurance. My experience had been that the Dr's just run you to all their buddies to run up bills for the Insurance Co. to pay. I'm sorry you are suffering, God Bless you.

The only thing that PT did for me was introduced me to a lot of people. The only ones it helped were the therapy outfit

Bill, that is a difference in the neurosurgeon I saw. He had done an upper back operation on me 9 years ago and treated me well. This time he told me that he could operate but his opinion was if he operated it would not help. He did mention that physical therapy might help but might not. My decision if I want it. Said if I needed his referal to call back but otherwise he did not need to see me again. Family Dr. is the one with all the big ideas. Talking about a tinge unit now to give me an electrical shock to block the pain. Did you try that?
If I retire looks like my insurance will be as much as $800 per month if I keep what I have. State will pay about $125 of that. Can't affort to retire. Got to get better. Heck I got a few fires left in me and got to go gator hunting with hooknline sometime. Also got to go to MO and straighten out Angus Cowman.

My problem is my arm, not my back. Many years ago I was in pain daily. Doctors, chiropractors, acupuncture. With each I would come out in more pain than I went in.

Until the PT. He had a tens machine. Ahhhhh bliss. The first time pain was taken away. You couldn't buy them back then, but I rented one and took it home and turned it up.

I am pain free now and don't own a tens machine, but if in pain again that would be the first thing I buy as you can buy them nowadays.
