Do you know an Attention seeker or are you perhaps one?
Here's some interesting info on the disorder -
"The need for attention
Human beings are social creatures and need social interaction, feedback, and validation of their worth. The emotionally mature person doesn't need to go hunting for these; they gain it naturally from their daily life, especially from their work and from stable relationships. Daniel Goleman calls emotional maturity emotional intelligence, or EQ; he believes that EQ is a much better indicator of a person's character and value than intelligence quotient, or IQ.
The emotionally immature person, however, has low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence and consequently feels insecure; to counter these feelings of insecurity they will spend a large proportion of their lives creating situations in which they become the centre of attention. It may be that the need for attention is inversely proportional to emotional maturity, therefore anyone indulging in attention-seeking behaviours is telling you how emotionally immature they are.
Attention-seeking behaviour is surprisingly common. Being the centre of attention alleviates feelings of insecurity and inadequacy but the relief is temporary as the underlying problem remains unaddressed: low self-confidence and low self-esteem, and consequent low levels of self-worth and self-love.
Arrogant & overconfident people may seek attention because they have the feeling that they deserve to be in the center of attention. Because they aren’t mature enough they still think with their inner child’s mentality which makes them believe that they are the center of the world."
Attention seekers use excessive or inappropriate behaviors in order to gain attention and often
brag about achievements and personal skills.
Reasons for Attention Seeking Behavior
* The individual is dealing with low self esteem. They inwardly feel that if they do not demand attention that people may ignore them altogether.
* Some people feel incredibly lonely and they use this behavior as a means to feel more connected to other people. Even if the individual spends a great deal of time around other individuals they can still experience loneliness.
* The individual needs attention in order to feel like a valuable person. This is because their self worth depends on the evaluations of other people and this is a type of emotional immaturity.
* People can pick up ineffective coping mechanisms in childhood. They can continue to use these strategies in adulthood because they believe they work.
* Some individuals have issues with jealously. They do not like it when the attention is on other people so they attempt to steal the limelight.
* There are some people who do manage to use attention seeking effectively to get what they want. They are working on the principle that the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
* Many people who are prone to attention seeking behavior suffer from a mental health condition known as narcissistic personality disorder. This involves an inflated sense of self importance and feelings of superiority."
How to respond to a Attention seeker-
"Tactical ignoring, also known as planned ignoring, is a behavioral management strategy used in response to challenging behavior that seeks to receive attention or to gain a reaction from others. It is a commonly used strategy when the person displaying the attention seeking behavior still feels rewarded by a negative response.
Oscar Wilde: "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." "
