Sort of, but not necessarily 3 years. If you plant root crowns, you're supposed to not harvest any the first year, and minimal harvest the second year. If I recall, I picked quite a bit the second year, I left the really skinny stalks but picked anything with some size to it. From then on I picked most everything. Yield kept increasing each year for at least the first 5 years. Planting seeds takes even longer, but I've never seen any reason to try that route. Yep, doesn't do anything to my wife. My body breaks down the asparagusic acid into a sulfurous byproduct. Even two sprigs will do it, same with my friend.
