My great-uncle, Haygood, died on this day in 1918. The first child of Elzie and Sarah, he left a holler in Kentucky (barefoot, by my grandads telling) to join the US Army.
His service was unremarkable, best that anyone knows. With one exception. The armistice was signed at 5 am, to go into effect at 11. In the interim, some commanders had their men stand down while some continued to order fighting as if it would make a difference. Legend has it that Haygood died about 10, in Belgium. Obeying orders, I assume.
Quite a few men died in those 6 hours, for naught.
Prayers for you today, uncle.
