Could you answer the question. test every US and Canadian bovine OTM at slaughter, if they have to be put down for CNS problems automatically test them as well , and every presumptive pos will have to be confirmed neg or pos in the UK to keep everything above board and if a sample is too degraded in when it gets to the UK for conformation that animal is automatically counted as positive. Do you think r-calf would go for that to ensure consumer confidence and safety?
 
I think testing is part of the problem that fits into the cure category. Where i would put my emphasis would be on the prevention side of things. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Address the issues that cause the problem instead of the ones that tell us how we have a problem. Feed ban compliance would be a better way to spend resources.
 
A yes or no would be good enough for an answer. If testing on every animal took place that would take care of the problem as contaminated matter would not get into the feed chain. Check the CFIA changes the Canadian feed regulations are some of the most stringent in the world. To prevent problems test every thing then the problem could be eliminated. why don't you want that? I can't follow the logic, test every animal and the consumer is safe and importers are confident. Why focus on the feed ban focuing there for the last 15 yrs. hasn't worked.
 
Geez skatchy, it seems you are kind of bitter over this whole fiasco. We are on the same team here. I'm pro open border, i don't think that the US need a mandatory ID system or to test every critter on earth either. we don't need to over regulate and get wasteful with our $. I think downers should be tested. If japan wants cattle that are guaranteed BSE free i don't see a problem with testing all of the cattle headed for Japan. Let the private sector work it out.
 
Well B11 i think i am just so aclimated to talking to r-calfers who want all their questions answered but won't answer any of mine. If i come off as bitter i am sorry that is not what i want. Here is how i see it, there is bse in Canada and the USA. But r-calf doesn't want to admit it and it they do admit it they down play it. I see it as a huge issue on many levels. So i think the levels of testing in can and US should be close to the same as would be the reason to test. But barring that manditory OTM BSE testing would take out possibles that could be missed. That is the way to eliminate BSE and get customer confidence world wide. I think the border will open to OTM cattle soon. I have heard from aquaintances that work for NBL up here head office has bought a few older less efficient kill plants in the northern states to kill canadan cows at for the grind market. They are usally pretty intouch with what is going down in the US. I don't think they would do that if they didn't know the OTM would be going into the US soon. Think about it if japan gets tested cattle what would it say if other countries accepted less. so i would say all countries will be asking for tested cattle.
